The Grinch Sequel Teased—And Another Jim Carrey Comedy Could Be Next
Jim Carrey could dust off two of his most beloved characters: Imagine Entertainment executive Jeb Brody is teasing sequels for How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Liar Liar, as Ron Howard’s Grinch marks its 25th anniversary.
File this under sequels you probably did not have on your 2024 bingo card: two Jim Carrey staples, the 2000 live-action How the Grinch Stole Christmas and 1997's Liar Liar, just got a little spark of life from the folks who actually own them.
So, what changed?
Jeb Brody, president of Imagine Features, sat down for a broader conversation about the future of Imagine Entertainment and casually dropped that the team has been batting around ideas for both Grinch and Liar Liar. In other words: no greenlights, but real conversations are happening.
"There are conversations around what to do with The Grinch. There are conversations around Liar Liar. There are conversations that we are having around a lot of this IP that we own."
Brody said this in an interview with Variety while talking through Imagine's slate and strategy. Worth noting: Imagine was founded by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. They still own the company and have brought in Brody and others to steer the next phase of growth.
Why now?
Grinch is hitting the 25-year mark, which is a convenient moment to rethink a title that has only grown in popularity. When the Ron Howard-directed version opened back in 2000, it made solid money, took some heat from critics, and still walked away with an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Over time, it became holiday comfort food for a lot of people. Sequel talk has popped up on and off for years, and in 2024 Jim Carrey even said he would be open to returning as the Grinch via motion-capture. For context, that movie adapts Dr. Seuss's 1957 book, which gives any follow-up a limited, tricky runway story-wise.
And Liar Liar?
That one is the cleaner case: the 1997 comedy was a big hit with both critics and audiences, and it remains one of the crown jewels of Carrey's 90s run. If a continuation exists, there is a wide lane to do it without a canon headache.
The current temperature
- Grinch: Ideas are being kicked around; Carrey has said he would consider a mo-cap return; the original is celebrating 25 years; the first film won the Oscar for Makeup and Hairstyling and built a sizable fanbase despite mixed reviews.
- Liar Liar: Also in the chat; the 1997 original was a major critical and commercial success.
None of this means you will see cameras rolling tomorrow, but it does mean the right people are actively exploring it. If Imagine finds the angle (and the money, and Jim Carrey's interest), don't be shocked if one or both moves from chatter to development.
