1. The Company of Wolves, 1984
Teenage girl Rosaleen lives in a country house with her parents and sister. One day, Rosaleen falls asleep and is transported to a medieval village in the middle of a fairytale forest.
A local grandmother tells her a story about a werewolf and tells her to beware of men who look like wolves. But one day in the forest, Rosaleen meets a mysterious and strangely hairy aristocrat.
Although the budget of the movie was small, the production designers did a great job. They managed to create the most realistic and at the same time magical atmosphere of a dream.
2. Labyrinth, 1986
Left alone at home, 15-year-old Sarah takes care of her half-brother. Angry at the boy, she wishes that the goblins would take him away. Just then, the child disappears and the goblin king Jareth appears in the room.
He tells Sarah that she has only 13 hours to get to his castle through a magical labyrinth, or her brother will be turned into a goblin. The girl sets off on a dangerous journey, meeting various magical creatures along the way.
Labyrinth is a movie by the greatest puppeteer Jim Henson. He created a bizarre magical world inhabited by many funny and sneaky creatures. David Bowie, with a crazy comb-over and bold smoky eyes, leads all this puppet variety.
3. The Green Knight, 2021
The main character of the movie is Sir Gawain, a knight from the Arthurian novels. On Christmas Eve, Gawain attends a meeting of the Round Table. During the celebration, the mysterious Green Knight appears in the hall.
Gawain cuts off the intruder's head, but the knight gets up and challenges Gawain to accept a similar blow in a year. Time passes, but Gawain is in no hurry to fulfill the promise he made to the Green Knight.
Director David Lowery creates a magical world on screen, woven from folklore and ancient and modern fears. His main character does not look like a typical knight, but more like an indecisive millennial with a lot of complexes, traumas and problems.
4. Dracula, 1992
In 1897, real estate agent Jonathan arrives in Transylvania to meet a wealthy client, Count Dracula. After arriving at the castle, Harker begins to notice oddities in the Count's behavior.
One day, Dracula notices a photograph of Harker's fiancée, Mina. She turns out to be the spitting image of the Count's wife, who died in the 15th century. Dracula throws Harker to be killed by his vampire brides and goes to London to look for the girl.
One of the best adaptations of Bram Stoker's novel was made by Francis Ford Coppola. In 1992, the movie won three Oscars, including one for makeup and costumes.
5. The Fall, 2006
Hollywood stuntman Roy Walker is hospitalized after a stunt goes wrong. He befriends Alexandria, a girl recovering from a broken arm.
Roy tells his new friend a tragic story about five heroes fighting the evil governor Odious. But the story is a trick. Roy is using the girl to steal morphine pills for him.
Former music video director Tarsem Singh has created a visually flawless fairy tale in which the real world is magically intertwined with the imaginary – parallel realities do not conflict, but complement each other.
