The Dialogue in OFMD Season 2 is Genius-Level, And These 5 Lines Prove It
We will never cease to ponder over these lines.
Our Flag Means Death features an exceptionally ingenious script. It is a humorous revisionist perspective on themes that challenge preconceived notions of pirate society being rife with toxic masculinity and blatant heteronormativity.
Furthermore, the first five episodes of Season 2 demonstrate how much better David Jenkins and his team of writers have gotten since the first season. They offer an even more thought-provoking and witty script than in their previous outing.
OFMD's dialog is genuinely brilliant, and the quotes below testify to that loud and clear.
5. It's A Safe Space Ship
After all the trials and tribulations Ed's team went through, they felt paranoid, thinking that Steed's crew was plotting against them, so they needed a safe space. In a twist of irony, it was Ed who declared, 'It's a safe space ship.' And while he still needed to reconcile with those he had wronged, it was an auspicious beginning to fostering trust and friendship aboard the Revenge.
4. F----Ing Barbarians
Episode 5 sees Stede discover a lavish jacket and ignore a Catholic priest's warning that it's cursed. Chaos and panic ensue on board the Revenge as the crew attempts to remove the jacket from Stede by force. Appalled by their ignorance and superstition, Stede calls them 'fucking barbarians.' For someone who normally makes it a point to never speak ill of his crew, that was an extremely uncharacteristic display of arrogance. Perhaps the jacket is indeed cursed, after all.
3. A Curse Is A Curse
'A curse is a curse. And when it takes hold... Well, then it takes hold,' Izzy says, making an observation that would have made Captain Obvious proud. The scene clearly pokes fun at mystical tropes and the whole notion of curses, hexes, jinxes, and whatnot.
Perhaps the worst thing about a curse is that you never know what it's actually supposed to do once it 'takes hold.'
2. That Black Pete Line
Lucious's near-death experience weighs heavy on him. 'You talk all the time about how you almost died,' Black Pete notes. 'But I never hear anything about the fact that you lived.' Hearing that, Lucious has a sudden epiphany that he's not been paying enough attention to the reunion with his lover.
1. For The New Unicorn
One of the key messages in Season 2 is that despite his flaws, Izzy deserves happiness. After losing his leg, he goes on a bender and vents his anger at the ship's unicorn figurehead. Feeling sorry for him, the crew refashions one of the unicorn's legs into a prosthetic for Izzy, leaving a heartfelt note with it that says, 'For the new unicorn.'
