Summary

  • The Crown is one of Netflix's most iconic shows.
  • The series' star was reluctant to take on his role and is happy to be done with it.
  • Dominic West played Prince Charles during the most difficult time of his life.

Since its launch, Netflix has produced hundreds of shows and movies, but it's fair to say that only a few have left their mark on the entertainment industry. The Crown is undoubtedly one of the few projects from the streaming service that has made an impact, winning over a wide audience from around the world.

Debuting in 2016, The Crown quickly became one of Netflix's flagship series. Intended to explore the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, the show followed a fictionalized version of the British royal family through the second half of the twentieth century. Naturally, The Crown delved into many of the crises the Windsors faced during that time, which is why the show was considered controversial during its six-season run. And now that it's over, many people are relieved - and the stars of the show are no exception.

Dominic West's Apprehension to Play Prince Charles

In a recent interview on BBC Radio 4's Today show, Dominic West, who played Prince Charles in seasons 5 and 6 of The Crown, revealed that he was originally reluctant to take on the role – probably out of respect for the royal family.

'I don't want to make their lives any more difficult than they already are, so I suppose it does concern you,' the actor said.

But in the end, West couldn't pass up a show written by Peter Morgan. And as much as he admittedly enjoyed being on The Crown, the actor is glad it's over, along with the heated public debate and criticism surrounding the show.

'All reactions worry me. I read all the reviews [of season 6] and spent two days in bed. So yes, I'm a sensitive soul, I worry about what people think,' Dominic West explained why he was relieved that there would be no more seasons of the show and public outcry about it. 'It's such a relief now to go back to theater and not have to talk about the monarchy anymore.'

Dominic West's Portrayal of Prince Charles

Although The Crown explored many of the issues facing the British royal family throughout the twentieth century, it was Dominic West who portrayed Prince Charles during his marriage to Princess Diana, their separation and divorce, and her tragic death. Given the sensitivity of the subject, the actor was under a lot of stress, so it's not surprising that he was worried about how his performance would be received.

Besides, it's absolutely clear why Dominic West is glad to be done with the role and the show altogether – no sane person enjoys picking at old wounds. Hopefully, the actor's new roles will be more pleasant.
