It is next to impossible to predict how this plot line will develop.

Summary

  • Homelander is the most followed character on The Boys.
  • His trial will become a pivotal point in his character arc.
  • Regardless of the outcome of the trial, Homelander will change forever.

Since its debut in 2019, The Boys has been one of the most popular Amazon Prime Video shows. Following a group of Supes – superhuman beings created by the Vought Corporation – and their adversaries, TB offers a more realistic view of the world in which some people have god-like powers. So far, the series has spanned three seasons and spawned a spin-off, Gen V. With a fourth season on the way, fans are eager to see what happens to their favorite characters.

In particular, the audience is most interested in Homelander's arc. As the show's main antagonist and a loathsome person responsible for many of the show's atrocities, he is finally being prosecuted for just one of his crimes – killing a protester. Naturally, most viewers rejoice at his comeuppance. But the results of the upcoming trial and Homelander's future are rather vague at this point.

What Might Homelander's Arc and Trial Be Like?

In fact, the show could go in many directions with this storyline. Sure, Homelander could be found guilty and convicted of murder, or at least manslaughter, but it's unclear how the justice system would deal with his sentence and with him at all.

However, the trial is more likely to go the following way. As suggested by Sister Sage in the Season 4 trailer, Homelander should take a step back, put on a nice front, and let the world descend into chaos in order to swoop in and save the day. In other words, the character could let people tear each other apart (strongly hinted at in the trailer) in order to play the savior later. This is a good PR ploy that would allow Homelander to build a favorable, more positive image in the eyes of the public, which could help him win over the judge and jury at his trial.

Further Repercussions

Although Homelander might get away with killing the protester, he would still face repercussions. The worldwide uproar, the pressure of the trial, and the loss of people's love could further derail the superhero and make him completely unhinged. As a result, more violence and carnage would follow, as he would commit more crimes and atrocities.

Perhaps it's too early to predict how things will go for Homelander in the upcoming fourth season of The Boys. But it's clear that the episode will be consequential for the character.
