The 15-Minute Tomato Tteokbokki You Can’t Stop Eating
Pillowy rice dumplings drenched in a zesty, chili-kissed sauce — quick to make, impossible to forget.
If you want big flavor with minimal fuss, make these soft-chewy rice cakes in a spicy tomato sauce. It is fast, bold, and tastes like a quick trip to a Seoul side street without leaving your kitchen. The rice cakes turn tender inside with a lightly fiery gloss outside, and the sauce brings bright, juicy depth. Weeknight-friendly, party-approved.
You will need
- Rice cakes (tteokbokki), ready-made — 300 g
- Fresh tomatoes — 2 pcs (about 200 g)
- Tomato paste — 2 tbsp
- Yellow onion — 1 small (about 80 g)
- Garlic — 2 cloves
- Chili sauce or gochujang — 1 tsp (optional, for heat)
- Soy sauce — 1 tbsp
- Sugar — 1/2 tsp
- Vegetable oil — 2 tbsp
- Water — 150 ml
- Scallions — a few stalks, for serving
- Sesame seeds — 1 tsp, for serving
How to make it
Step 1: Prep. Score the tomatoes with a shallow cross, pour boiling water over them, peel, then dice the flesh finely. Slice the onion into thin half-moons. Mince the garlic. Slice the scallions into rounds.
Step 2: Build the sauce. Warm the oil in a deep skillet over medium heat. Cook the onion until translucent. Add the garlic and stir for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Tip in the diced tomatoes and the water; simmer 3-4 minutes until the tomatoes soften. Stir in the tomato paste, soy sauce, sugar, and the chili sauce or gochujang if you want heat (I reach for gochujang for a deeper kick). Let the sauce simmer 2 minutes until smooth and slightly thickened.
Step 3: Cook the rice cakes. Add the rice cakes to the pan and fold them through the sauce so they are fully coated. Cover and simmer over medium heat for 5-7 minutes, until the cakes turn tender and soak up some of the sauce. Stir occasionally so the rice cakes keep separate and glaze evenly.
Serve it hot
Shower with sliced scallions and sesame seeds and serve right away. It pairs beautifully with a halved boiled egg, crisp fresh vegetables, or kimchi on the side.
