In 2023, no one needs to feel guilty about non-consensual exposure.

We all remember those times when many celebrities' iCloud data was hacked. The incident dubbed 'Celebgate' caused a huge scandal back then, with fans putting blame on the stars. Fortunately, society has evolved since then, and the majority came to realize that celebs are also people with their own boundaries, and therefore it is not ethical to shame them for something they did not consent to (and if they did, who cares?).

Ted Lasso's most recent episode to date touched on a similar ethical issue. However, the way it was rendered in the series seems a bit… outdated?

In that episode, a major hacking attack occurred, and Keeley was one of the victims. As her sex tape became available online, the character found the strength to fight back, proving that it wasn't her fault and that there was ultimately no need for her to apologize for the non-consensual postings.

The episode's main antagonist turned out to be Jack, Keeley's boss/partner, who said she would take care of the scandal. However, according to Jack, the only appropriate solution in this situation was a lawyer-prepared apology for Keeley that would have whitewashed Jack's reputation instead of helping the victim herself. And that is what made fans mad.

'The statement Jack had for Keeley was so dated. It wouldn't work in the current social environment, not for a celebrity like Keeley,' one of the fans said on Reddit.

We may recall, for instance, the 2020 case where Chris Evans accidentally leaked his own genitals on one of the Instagram stories. Despite the potential for a scandal, the star was supported by his colleagues as well as fans, who all agreed that there was nothing to be ashamed of.

So to many fans, this plot twist seems rather dated, to say the least. Nevertheless, it still worked well to show that Jack, who clearly has an internal misogyny problem, only cares about herself and what people think of her.

'Jack wasn't concerned about PR for the public, just her own circle of friends who are evidently just as judgmental as she is,' another Redditor added.

In addition to hiding the fact Keeley was her girlfriend, Jack victim-blamed her in a private conversation, making Keeley feel guilty. Overall, that last episode and the whole sex tape leaking affair perfectly showed her true colors, proving that Jack is only worried about how her rich and equally spoiled friends perceive her.

No one has to apologize for someone exposing their private content without asking, and that seems to be the consensus among the public in this day and age.

As for the resolution of the conflict between Keeley and Jack, we're looking forward to seeing it in Ted Lasso's next episode on May 10.
