Ted Lasso Ending: Was It All Just A Dream? Brendan Hunt Clears the Air
Fans wonder if the show's finale was just Ted's dream.
After three sensational seasons, the adored Apple TV+ comedy, Ted Lasso, has concluded, offering a satisfying finale for Jason Sudeikis's charismatic coach and the host of beloved supporting characters. The final episode saw Richmond place second in the English Premier League, while Ted resigned as the team's manager to return to the United States and be with his son, Henry.
However, the joyful montage of Ted's English friends living it up sparked fan speculation about whether this final sequence could have just been a figment of Ted's imagination.
In this montage, viewers see Keeley and Rebecca set up their own women's association football team, Roy Kent nominated as Ted's successor, and Coach Beard finally marrying his girlfriend, Jane, in a ceremony set within Stonehenge. Sounds idyllic, doesn't it?
Indeed it does, but fans were left puzzled. Why did the lighting, location, and set of Coach Beard's wedding seem so odd, and why was Ted not present at his best friend's wedding? The fact that Ted was seen waking up immediately after this montage seemed to suggest that all preceding scenes were simply a dream.
While this theory of Ted envisioning his friends' happiness is fascinating, Ted Lasso's co-creator, Brendan Hunt, says the montage was never intended to be interpreted this way. Hunt offered fans a conclusive reason for Ted's absence from Coach Beard's wedding while subtly indicating that all the scenes in the series finale were real.
‘Personally, I think Beard called Ted and told him he could sit this one out, and Ted said thanks, because the ceremony conflicted with a big game for Henry’s soccer team. The history of their relationship is long periods of seeing each other and long periods not. We have entered one of the latter, but the former will come around again at some point. They love each other, they will see each other again,’ Hunt said.
Therefore, fans can rest assured about the future of the Ted Lasso characters, particularly as there's considerable pressure on Apple TV to create spinoffs focused on various members of the show's ensemble cast.
