Ted Lasso Director Just Gave Us a Glimmer of Hope For Season 4
The fan-favorite show may return in a few years.
Ted Lasso Season 1 was a real eye-opener in 2020, enticing viewers with an uplifting story that combined the best of American and British humor. And though the creators were able to give a satisfying conclusion to their narrative in just three seasons, fans are still hoping for a continuation of some sorts, whether in the form of a Ted Lasso sequel or a spin-off exploring other characters.
Creator and lead actor Jason Sudeikis has repeatedly stated that he, Joe Kelly, Bill Lawrence, and Brendan Hunt have no intention of continuing Ted Lasso any further after they've brought their main story to a closure. However, the rest of the series' cast and crew are not opposed to the idea, speculating about possible sequels and spin-offs in numerous interviews.
Declan Lowney, one of Ted Lasso directors, recently gave fans a glimmer of hope with his encouraging comment.
'Everybody knew it was the end, but it's also the end for now,' the director hinted vaguely.
Lowney was responsible for directing several episodes in all three seasons and also served as a supervising producer on Season 2, winning an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2022. As one of the key creators of Ted Lasso, the Irish director has brought his unique vision to the show and is undoubtedly still invested in the project.
According to Lowney, the discussions for a Ted Lasso sequel are happening behind closed doors, and the showrunners aren't ready to share any details yet. But despite Sudeikis' firm denial of any plans for a sequel, Lowney is confident that the third chapter of the hit series is not going to be its final.
'You know, I think that it [could have] kept going, but it had done its thing — the three-season arc, that was the deal, that was what [Sudeikis] wanted,' the director added. 'But I feel there's something else… There will be other things.'
When production began on the final episode, everyone on set knew that this was the finale where Ted's story would end. At the same time, many other storylines were left unresolved, giving fans room for interpretation and speculation, and also leaving a window open for the series' creators to work out more ideas in the future.
'It's going to be two or three years before anything happens — if anything happens,' Lowney concluded, suggesting that a fourth season of Ted Lasso is still a possibility.
