No other character arc had as much tension and drama as that brief interaction.

Summary

  • The Big Bang Theory featured a variety of human relationships over its long run.
  • While Penny and Leonard's arc was very dramatic, it wasn't as spicy as the relationship between the Hofstadter and Cooper's mothers.
  • The show's fans wish the two women had had more screen time.

During The Big Bang Theory's extensive twelve-year run, it was CBS's flagship sitcom, popular with audiences all over the world. When the show premiered in 2007, it wasn't an instant hit, as viewers didn't really get its brand of humor. But over time, TBBT has become one of the most popular comedy series in the world.

For twelve consecutive seasons, The Big Bang Theory revolved around a gang of nerdy CalTech scientists and their friends and loved ones as they navigated their respective fields of science and the more treacherous world of human relationships. While the characters' friendships were key to the show's dynamic, there were a couple of romances that added drama and momentum to the plot. In particular, Penny and Leonard's on-again, off-again love arc was a major source of tension on TBBT. But even their tumultuous relationship cannot compare to the spicy feud between Leonard and Sheldon's mothers.

Dr. Beverly Hofstadter vs Mrs. Mary Cooper

Portrayed by Christine Baranski (The Good Wife, The Gilded Age) and Laurie MetCalf (Roseanne, Frasier), respectively, the mothers of the main characters made several appearances on The Big Bang Theory, but they did not meet until episode 23 of season 8, when they visited their sons to congratulate them on receiving a prestigious scientific award. As different as ice and fire, the two women immediately sparked a feud due to their opposing worldviews.

While Sheldon's mom was a devout Christian, Leonard's mother was a psychiatrist and a militant atheist. As a result, Beverly and Mary couldn't agree on basic things, and their argument quickly heated up, prompting Penny to come between them – much to her chagrin. Needless to say, the two mothers' conflict is considered by many fans to be the spiciest relationship on TBBT.

Unfortunately, Dr. Hofstadter and Mrs. Cooper didn't have much interaction on the show after the episode, which many viewers think is a pity.

'I wish these moms had more time on the show. Their interactions are not only hilarious, but an excellent lesson in social interactions, communication, personalities,' one YouTube user wrote.

Given the tension between the characters and the actresses' talents, it's no surprise that viewers are in awe of the feud between the two mothers.

'The actresses playing Leonard and Sheldon's mothers are fantastic. I always perked up when I would see either one of these two wonderful ladies come on the show. Bringing them together was the best,' another YouTuber commented.

Hopefully, we'll see a spin-off about Leonard and his childhood to see how Dr. Beverly Hofstadter became the woman she is on TBBT.
