The Housemaid 2 is heating up. Producer Todd Lieberman says the sequel to Sydney Sweeney’s erotic thriller is taking shape, with fresh progress as development accelerates.

The Housemaid sequel is moving from rumor to reality. Producer Todd Lieberman says the follow-up is in active development, the script is already rolling, and the industry heat around it is very real.

Why this sequel is happening

The first movie, a Lionsgate-backed thriller led by Sydney Sweeney and co-starring Amanda Seyfried with Paul Feig directing, crushed expectations. It opened at number one in December 2025 and went on to pull in about $388.9 million worldwide against a reported $35–$60 million budget. That kind of run turns a one-off into a franchise pretty fast.

How it started

Lieberman's company, Hidden Pictures, developed The Housemaid internally after picking up Freida McFadden's bestseller. He says he got pushed to read the book during a company retreat and tore through it. His take: "I didn't see any of the twists and turns coming."

Even with franchise potential baked in, Lieberman insists they kept their blinders on at first. "I'm wildly superstitious about talking about a sequel before the first one even comes out." Still, the team had quietly optioned three novels in McFadden's series when development began. Then, during post-production, Feig and his producing partner nudged everyone to be ready in case the movie broke out. The result: they actually started writing the sequel before the first film hit theaters. Bold move, and clearly the right one.

Where things stand now

Lieberman won't spill plot or production specifics yet, but he did tease the overall vibe: "I can't really talk about where we are now, but I will say this: the script is excellent, and there's a lot of excitement around it."

The plan is to adapt McFadden's follow-up novel, The Housemaid's Secret. If schedules line up, cameras could start rolling in 2026.
