The character has been put through so much it’s impossible not to empathise with him at this point.

While it's true that some characters are created to be hated, their lot is not always fair. And thus, even villains may occasionally elicit our sympathy.

That is precisely the case with Bill from Sweet Magnolias. Ever since Netflix released the series in 2020, he has been depicted as the ultimate antagonist. As the treacherous husband of one of the main characters, who impregnated his assistant at work, Bill was the primary target of audience hatred during the show's early stages. However, in season 3, it would appear that the writers have gone too far trying to make him suffer.

Although most viewers still hate Bill, and there are ample reasons for that, they're unhappy about the severe punishment the showrunners have subjected him to this season. The storyline involving Bill and Noreen is the most bewildering of Sweet Magnolias. He left his family for her and their unborn child, only for Noreen to abruptly renege on her decision, denying him the right to be the father of their child; specifically, Noreen refused to let Bill's name be included in the baby's birth certificate.

Second, the situation between Bill and Isaac is, to put it mildly, complicated. On the one hand, Isaac grew up without his biological parents and was deeply affected by this. On the other, Bill was unaware that Peggy had become pregnant after their brief encounter many years ago. Furthermore, she never told him about the baby and that she had given Isaac up for adoption.

At the same time, Bill appears to be doing his utmost to be a good father to his numerous children. He juggles his job at the hospital, his children with Maddie, and a new family from which he's excluded. The writers seem determined to make his life miserable, with no opportunity for redemption.

'Bill is actively trying, and if they don't want to treat him better or give him some kind of character growth, then they should just write him off the show instead of letting him be a punching bag for the other characters,' a Redditor wrote. 'Also, I will never forgive the writers for making me defend Bill.'

We can only hope the man gets some kind of closure in the next instalment of Sweet Magnolias if it ever sees the light of day.
