Not many people actually love the show.

When the first season of Sweet Magnolias debuted on Netflix in 2020, millions of people fell in love with the story of three women navigating their lives as mothers, wives, and long-time friends. At first, the show appealed to viewers as the perfectly cozy melodrama, but sadly, the quality of the acting, writing, and directing dropped significantly in the second season.

But even though the recently released Season 3 is the series' worst yet, fans are demanding that Netflix renew the show for a fourth installment. Why?

The thing is, no one really expects melodramas to be ingenious and well-written, as people watch these shows just to feel good and forget about their everyday problems. Instead of giving fans a complicated world full of compelling personalities, melodramas are valued for their predictable plots and simple characters who are easy to understand and relate to (or hate them as straightforward antagonists).

However, after the third season of Sweet Magnolias, it became painfully obvious that the Netflix show was incapable of doing even that. That's why fans were prompted to come up with another explanation for why they still watch the series, and that explanation is surprising in fact.

It turns out that most people watch Sweet Magnolias for one reason and one reason only — to make fun of it.

'I was trying to figure out why I kept watching this show. I liked the premise of the three gals who had been friends since childhood. It seemed kind of cozy. After the first season, the acting and storytelling got so cringe. All the romantic pairings were duds. I don't waste my time hate-watching anything. Then I figured it out. I cheese-watch. It's so cheesy I can't look away,' one fan said.

Yes, it looks like lots of people are watching Sweet Magnolias ironically, not hating it — but laughing at how bad it is. Thanks to the show, viewers can improve their mood, as mocking the characters and their bad-written stories actually helps them feel better about themselves.

While this may sound a bit paradoxical, being a bad show actually helps Sweet Magnolias build its audience, and it's no wonder many of these people would love to see their favorite melodrama renewed for future seasons — just to keep their spirits high.
