Supernatural's 5 Greatest Meta Moments We're Still Not Over
One thing Supernatural certainly knows how to do best is creating hilarious meta moments - here are the greatest, according to Reddit.
One of the most remarkable and unique aspects of Supernatural is its ability to make viewers feel like they're part of an inside joke. With nods to fan culture, clever references to classic TV tropes, and an affinity to self-referential humor, the show became the epitome of meta-ception.
And throughout its impressive 15-year run, the series treated us to numerous unforgettable meta moments that we're still not over.
5. Days of Our Lives in 'The French Mistake' (S6E15)
Sam and Dean find themselves in an alternate reality on the set of Supernatural. Naturally, the show grabs the opportunity to take a playful jab at one of its own actors, Jensen Ackles, and his previous appearance in a soap opera called Days of Our Lives. But that's not even the best part! To make matters even more hilarious, right after Dean slams the laptop shut, we see on the TV screen behind him that Jensen looks at the audience, and then Jared turns around and winks. How meta is that?
4. Linda Blair in 'The Usual Suspects' (S2E07)
This season 2 episode features Linda Blair, known for her iconic role in the 1973 horror flick The Exorcist as the possessed child who vomits up pea soup. In a nod to the role, the episode humorously remarks on her familiar appearance, culminating in the gem of a line, 'For some reason, I could really go for some pea soup,' paying homage to Blair's horror legacy.
3. Gilmore Girls in 'Hollywood Babylon' (S2E18)
The Winchester brothers find themselves on a WB studio lot tour. As they pass the Gilmore Girls set, the guide excitedly mentions the series and that if they're lucky they might catch one of the show's stars. Sam is visibly uncomfortable and bolts from the golf cart. As Padalecki's breakout role was on this show, this brilliant meta moment truly highlights the show's love for self-referential jokes.
2. Sam & Dean Trapped in a TV Land in 'Changing Channels' (S5E08)
Now, this episode takes meta to a whole new level. As Sam and Dean navigate different TV show tropes while trapped in a surreal dimension, the episode pays homage to a number of genres. From a Japanese nut-punching game show and a CSI Miami parody to Knight Rider, the episode cleverly incorporates an array of pop culture references. And, of course, the icing on the cake was when Dean and Sam ironically wished they were back in a TV show (while being on the show).
1. Paris Hilton in 'Fallen Idols' (S5E05)
This episode delivers a clever meta moment featuring Paris Hilton as Leshii, a supernatural creature. When Dean confronts her, he dismissively tells her, 'I'm not a Paris Hilton BFF, I've never even seen 'House of Wax.'' Sam's face when Dean dropped that line was priceless as the witty line is a jab at Padalecki and Hilton's appearance in the teen slasher.
