Supergirl Blasts Off: James Gunn Teases a Guardians of the Galaxy–Style Space Adventure
Supergirl is poised to channel Guardians of the Galaxy, blending spacefaring spectacle with irreverent heart and misfit swagger.
James Gunn is getting very comfy building giant sci-fi playgrounds, and now he says DC is about to lean into that vibe in a big way with Supergirl.
"Supergirl especially is a space adventure. It's like Guardians."
In a Rolling Stone chat, the DC Studios co-CEO laid out how his current slate fits together. He says the big swing ending of Peacemaker season 2 — the one that strands Chris in another universe and turns Rick Flag Sr. into a guy working against metahumans — isn't just a loose end. Those threads are baked into the larger plan. But, importantly, each project still stands on its own. Translation: there's a grand design, but you won't need a PhD in crossovers to follow along.
On the space side, Gunn says Supergirl carries some of that Guardians DNA — a full-on cosmic adventure — while the Green Lantern TV series, Lanterns, is being built to function as its own corner of the map. He keeps coming back to the idea of a bigger world where sometimes stories collide, and other times you&aposre just getting another window into the same universe. Honestly, that Peacemaker finale setup is a pretty wild swing to thread through future projects, but it sounds like that&aposs the job.
As for the reaction to that finale, not everyone was thrilled about the lack of massive cameos or shock reveals. Gunn kept it simple on Threads: he's happy with the episode, and he gets that some fans aren't. If you were hoping that meant a course correction via more seasons, temper expectations — a third season doesn't sound likely right now.
What's coming and when
- Supergirl hits theaters June 26, 2026, positioned as a big, space-forward adventure.
- Lanterns, the Green Lantern TV show, is set to arrive around the same time and is designed to operate largely on its own terms.
- After that, the next DC movie on deck is Superman: Man of Tomorrow — basically a follow-up to Superman — with Clark and Lex Luthor forced to team up against a larger threat that sure looks like Brainiac.
So, the snapshot: cosmic Supergirl energy, grounded-but-standalone Lanterns, a Superman follow-up with a classic frenemy pairing, and Peacemaker's reality-hopping fallout woven through the background. Big puzzle, lots of pieces, occasional intersections — and yes, a little Guardians-style stardust on Supergirl.
