The Super Mario Galaxy Movie clocks in at 1 hour 38 minutes, per AMC, as Nintendo powers up its sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Mario and Luigi are suiting up for round two, and now we know how long the ride is. A current AMC Theatres listing pegs The Super Mario Galaxy Movie at 1 hour and 38 minutes, which is six minutes longer than the first film’s 1 hour and 32 minutes. Not a game-changer, but enough time to squeeze in a few extra star bits.

This sequel sends the Brooklyn plumbers on another splashy quest with a few new faces and a clear nod to the Galaxy era. Along the way, they cross paths with Princess Peach, Toad, and Yoshi. The wrinkle this time: Bowser’s kid, Bowser Jr., is stepping up as the problem, and Princess Rosalina is entering the chat. That alone tells you what corner of the Mario universe they’re tapping.

  • Voice cast: Chris Pratt (Mario), Charlie Day (Luigi), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), Benny Safdie (Bowser Jr.), Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek), Brie Larson (Princess Rosalina)

Behind the scenes, the team that cracked the first one is basically back intact. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic return to direct, with Matthew Fogel once again scripting from Nintendo’s long-running roster of characters. Illumination chief Chris Meledandri produces alongside Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s executive fellow and representative director. Composer Brian Tyler is also back on the score, and Universal Pictures and Nintendo are sharing the financing. The continuity here is not subtle.

For context: The Super Mario Bros. Movie (released April 2023) bulldozed the box office with $1.36 billion worldwide, finishing second for the year behind Barbie’s $1.45 billion. So yes, expectations are high. If Galaxy lands, expect Nintendo and Illumination to keep building this out. There’s already been chatter about a Donkey Kong spinoff fronted by Seth Rogen, who played the character last time.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opens April 1, 2026, from Universal Pictures. The calendar says April Fools’ Day, but those numbers say they are extremely serious.
