Stranger Things Star Joe Keery Sets the Record Straight on Conformity Gate
Cold Storage star Joe Keery is done with Stranger Things—time for fans to move on, too.
Joe Keery is back on the big screen, and Stranger Things die-hards are still chasing ghosts. As his new movie rolls out, the fan-favorite who made Steve Harrington a capital-G Guy is having a little fun with the lingering rumor that a secret final episode of Stranger Things exists. Spoiler: it doesn’t. He knows. He checked… his memory.
Keery gently pops the 'secret episode' bubble
In a recent interview promoting his new film, Keery was asked about the so-called Conformity Gate theory — the idea that Netflix was hiding one last Stranger Things installment. He could not have been clearer.
"I knew there was no episode."
His co-star Georgina Campbell chimed in with the perfect rejoinder:
"You would know. I followed it."
Keery still tipped his cap to the rumor’s architect, though:
"How did this happen? It’s great, though. Whoever started is a genius, right?"
For what it’s worth, even the interviewer admitted they were glued to Netflix that night waiting to see if a surprise dropped. That’s how hard the theory cooked the fandom brain.
The Cold Storage of it all
Keery’s brand-new movie, Cold Storage, arrives with healthy buzz and a fresh 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s a comedic sci-fi thriller directed by Jonny Campbell and written by David Koepp — a neat little genre mash-up about two self-storage co-workers facing a crisis wildly above their pay grade. A government-sealed parasitic fungus breaks loose, multiplies, and suddenly these everyday folks, Travis and Naomi, are the last line of defense. If that dynamic rings a bell for Stranger Things viewers who remember Steve’s beleaguered Season 3 shift manager era, you’re not alone.
- Now in theaters: Cold Storage
- Rotten Tomatoes score: 79%
- Director: Jonny Campbell
- Writer: David Koepp
- Main cast: Joe Keery, Georgina Campbell, Liam Neeson
- Premise: Two storage-facility co-workers, Travis and Naomi, scramble to contain a government-sealed parasitic fungus that’s suddenly on the loose
Why the rumor won’t quit
Stranger Things wrapped on New Year’s Eve 2025, and a big chunk of the audience walked away unhappy. That happens with mega-shows — Lost, Game of Thrones, pick your poison — but this time the vacuum seemed big enough for a full-blown 'there’s one more episode' crusade to take hold. Hashtags trended, fans combed through clues, and yes, people literally waited on Netflix for a stealth drop. The theory stuck because it promised the thing disappointed viewers wanted most: one last pivot, one more rug-pull.
What might help fans turn the page
There’s a new project on deck: Stranger Things: Tales From '85. It’s set between Seasons 2 and 3, has not been confirmed as canon, and introduces a new character named Nikki Baxter. Different era, fresh angle, and maybe just enough space from the finale to reset expectations. If the fandom needs a palate cleanser, this could be it.
In the meantime, Keery’s having a moment that fits him: cracking wise about a viral theory while headlining a creature-feature that plays to his 'regular guy vs. impossible problem' sweet spot. Secret episode or not, you can actually watch this one.
