Stranger Things Refuses to Die: Eddie Munson Prequel May Lead to Spin-off
The beloved hero might actually return to the screen.
Without a doubt, Stranger Things is the most popular show in Netflix's extensive library, so the news that the final fifth season would be delayed amidst the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes really disappointed millions of fans around the world.
However, it looks like the streaming giant has no intention of forcing fans to wait so long for the next installment without any Stranger Things content. Recently, Netflix announced an original novel set in the world of the hit show, which will focus on the early days of Joseph Quinn's Eddie Munson.
The upcoming novel, titled Flight of Icarus, is written by one of Stranger Things creators, Caitlin Schneiderhan. The story will be set two years before the events of the fourth season, when Eddie was just 19 years old and struggling to make it through his senior year.
Although the upcoming book will most likely not contain any supernatural elements, as Eddie only learned about the Upside Down from Eleven and her friend when he was 21, the novel is still highly anticipated by the fandom. The reason is simple: people expect Netflix to adapt the story for a spin-off movie or series in the future.
Yes, it would be weird to see a Stranger Things spin-off without monsters and secret experiments, but Quinn has already proven himself as a captivating performer, and people would be more than happy to see both Eddie and the whole town of Hawkins from a more mundane and realistic point of view.
Also, the Duffer brothers have revealed a while back that they plan to turn Stranger Things into a full-blown franchise, creating new spin-off shows after the original saga ends. So why not start with Flight of Icarus?
Joseph Quinn is already 29, so playing a 19-year-old might prove a bit problematic, but fans will surely let him fly for the chance to see Eddie again. And since the actor has confirmed his desire to reprise the role, there's really no reason for Netflix not to adapt the book as a prequel series.
