The hype machine is already in overdrive, and fans are bracing for what could be the wildest chapter the series has ever pulled off.

Stranger Things is going out with a bang — and apparently a logistical migraine. Ross Duffer just dropped an update on the final season, confirmed the first batch is fully locked, and teased two episodes that sound very big and very chaotic. Also: time jump, quarantine, Vecna endgame, and a familiar cast list with one very cool new face.

What Duffer just delivered

Duffer says the show is rolling out in three volumes, and Volume One (the first four episodes) is finished in post. His Instagram update name-checked Episodes 3 and 4 being locked, mixed, scored, and colored, which basically means the whole first drop is buttoned up.

"Chapters Three and Four: locked, mixed, scored, colored… Volume One is DONE."

"Sorcerer is MASSIVE – as big as any finale we’ve ever done, and the most logistically insane shoot of our lives. We’re still recovering."

Where season 5 picks up

There is a time jump. We land in the fall of 1987, with Hawkins under military quarantine while Mike and the gang gear up for their final showdown with Vecna. The setup is classic Stranger Things: kids vs. apocalyptic nightmare, but with the stakes fully maxed.

The episode teases (and a very inside-baseball flex)

Duffer singled out two chapters by name. First up: The Turnbow Trap, which he calls the most classic Stranger Things-y episode of the season — and it is directed by Frank Darabont. Yes, that Frank Darabont, the filmmaker behind The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, and the guy who launched The Walking Dead. He literally came out of retirement to do this one. That is some serious get.

Then there is Sorcerer, which Duffer says is as big as any finale they have ever made and was the most complicated shoot of their careers. Translation: expect scale, and probably a lot of helicopters, vehicles, and things that make schedulers cry.

Who is back (and who is new)

The final season brings back the core cast: Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Gaten Matarazzo, Sadie Sink, Winona Ryder, and David Harbour. New to the party is Terminator legend Linda Hamilton, which feels exactly right for a season leaning into military lockdowns and monster hunting.

When you can watch

  • Volume One (4 episodes): November 26 on Netflix
  • Volume Two: December 25
