Steve Martin Abruptly Cancels Shows With Only Murders in the Building Costar After COVID-19 Diagnosis

COVID-19 has sidelined Steve Martin, who canceled two back-to-back shows and hit pause on his tour with Only Murders in the Building co-star Martin Short.
Steve Martin had to hit pause on the road. He tested positive for COVID-19 and pulled the plug on two back-to-back Virginia dates with Martin Short. It sounds like a quick detour, not a full stop, but here’s what actually changed and what’s next.
What got canceled
- Virginia Beach: The Dome, Sep 19 (part of the duo’s 'Dukes of Funnytown' tour)
- Richmond: Allianz Amphitheater at Riverfront, Sep 20
How it went down
On Sep 19, Martin posted on Instagram that he’d come down with COVID and couldn’t go on. He paired the news with a photo of a very bummed-out dog in Mickey Mouse ears, because of course he did. A little later, he shared a pic of the actual positive test and captioned it: "Hey! No flu!" Even sick, the man stays on brand.
"Dear Virginia Beach and Richmond. Sadly, I have come down with COVID. I can’t possibly do the shows that you deserve. So Marty and I must cancel tonight & tomorrow. But we will return under better circumstances."
Soon after, his official site backed it up, saying the duo was canceling out of "an abundance of caution." If you had tickets, you’re covered: refunds are available, and the note came with a sorry-about-that for the last-minute shuffle.
What’s next for the tour
The run is not derailed. The next scheduled show is Oct 4 at Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida. From there, they’ve got more than 30 dates mapped out across the U.S., stretching all the way through April 2026. That’s a long runway, which should make rescheduling Virginia realistic once he’s back to normal.
The bigger picture
Between tour stops, Martin and Short are still busy on screen — both recently returned for season five of Hulu’s 'Only Murders in the Building.' Their creative partnership goes way back to the cult classic 'Three Amigos' (1986), which makes this latest speed bump feel like just that: a short break for two guys who have been doing this together for decades.
If you’re in Virginia, it’s a letdown for now, but Martin made it pretty clear they plan to circle back "under better circumstances." Keep an eye on your ticketing email for refund details and any makeup dates.
