The network is ruining the show.

It's no secret that Starz has struggled to stay relevant in recent years, as most of its hit shows have long since ended, with only Outlander keeping the network afloat. However, when Heels premiered in 2021, most fans were sure that the network had finally found its new hit drama, as the show about wrestlers starring Stephen Amell drew huge ratings and excellent reviews from fans and critics alike.

However, just a few days after the end of Season 2, the entire fandom was shocked when Starz executives suddenly announced their decision to cancel the show despite a huge cliffhanger, as the ratings were dropping and the high production costs made the idea of renewing the show simply unprofitable.

Nails in the coffin

Both fans and the creative team behind Heels were stunned to hear the news, as everyone was sure the show would return for Season 3. Nevertheless, Amell and series creator Michael Waldron announced their plans to find a new home for Heels, hoping that the third season would be acquired by Netflix or Amazon Prime. However, it appears that Starz did not like the idea.

Today, without any notice, Starz removed the second season of Heels from their website, making it impossible to watch the show in the US. Although some fans thought the network was simply trying to get rid of Amell and Waldron, it looks like Starz decided to take down the second installment for one important reason - to avoid paying residuals.

After the WGA strike ended, residuals for writers became a lot more than they ever were, and it looks like Starz decided that canceling the show was a lot less expensive than actually paying the writers the money.

Hope Still Lingers

However, fans have come up with another explanation for the sudden cancellation, arguing that another network or streaming service may have bought the show and Starz was forced to remove the episodes because it no longer holds the rights to them.

While this would be ideal for all fans of Heels, we will have to wait for an official explanation from Starz.
