Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic stole the spotlight at The Game Awards 2025, but director Casey Hudson says it’s still early in development — and that has fans bracing for a long wait.

So, yeah: the biggest curveball at The Game Awards 2025 was a brand-new Star Wars game set in the Old Republic era. It looks cool, it has a familiar name steering the ship, and it’s also very early. Cue the internet panic about when we’ll actually get to play it.

What actually got announced

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is in the works, led by Casey Hudson — the guy who previously led Knights of the Old Republic and Anthem. It’s a fresh Old Republic story, but the key detail right now is this: the game is in early development and does not have a release date yet.

Why people started throwing around 2030

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier chimed in after the reveal and said his “optimistic guess” for release would be 2030. His reasoning: Lucasfilm told him the studio making the game was founded this year (2025), which, if you’ve watched game dev timelines lately, suggests a long road ahead. He even joked it might slip all the way to the PlayStation 7 era. Not exactly soothing words if you were hoping for a quick turnaround.

Casey Hudson pushes back

Hudson saw the chatter and jumped in with a little clarity of his own on December 13:

"Don’t worry about the 'not till 2030' rumors. Game will be out before then. I’m not getting any younger!"

Translation: it’s not next year, but he’s publicly planting a flag that this thing lands before 2030. That’s not a hard date, but it does deflate the doomsday timeline.

Where things really stand

Early development means just that — there’s a lot of building left to do. And, yes, delays are a fact of life in this industry because polish matters. Fans clocked that reality too and, to their credit, plenty of replies under Hudson’s post urged the team to take the time they need. Honestly, fair. Rushing a game almost never ends well, and if any corner of Star Wars deserves a careful, big-swing treatment, it’s the Old Republic.

  • Dec 12, 2025: Game announced at The Game Awards; led by Casey Hudson; set in the Old Republic; early development, no date.
  • Same night: Jason Schreier says 2030 is an optimistic guess, noting the dev studio was founded in 2025, and jokes about a future console generation.
  • Dec 13, 2025: Hudson responds, saying it will arrive before 2030 and throws in a self-aware "I’m not getting any younger!"

My read

The takeaway is simple: don’t expect it soon, but also don’t mark your calendar for 2030. The studio is new, the project is big, and the promise is a proper Old Republic adventure. I’m fine letting them cook if it means we get something that actually feels like a sweeping Star Wars space opera again.
