Squid Game and Eternals Stars Join Netflix's Next Extraction
Netflix is expanding the Extraction universe with spin-off Tygo, now in development with Don Lee and talent from Squid Game and Eternals.
Netflix is not done squeezing adrenaline out of the Extraction world. The streamer just pulled back the curtain on a new South Korean spin-off called TYGO, and it sounds like they’re building a full-on global web for this franchise.
So, what’s TYGO?
TYGO is a standalone spin-off set in South Korea, centered on an ex-child soldier who’s now a mercenary. After a mission goes sideways, he cuts a path through Korea’s underworld to settle the score. Don Lee plays the title character, Tygo, which instantly tells you the kind of bone-crunching, no-nonsense action they’re aiming for.
"TYGO brings a distinctly Korean identity into the global Extraction universe. We can’t wait to unleash its explosive energy on audiences worldwide."
It’s a big milestone for the cast too: BLACKPINK’s Lisa makes her first major film appearance here, and Lee Jin-uk (who’s openly a fan of the Extraction movies) is along for the ride. Lisa’s take? Doing an action movie has been on her bucket list, and landing this as her first role is basically the dream scenario.
Who’s making it
- Cast: Don Lee, Lee Jin-uk, Lisa
- Director: Lee Sang-yong
- Writer: Cha Woo-jin
- Producers: Big Punch Pictures and AGBO
- Co-producers: Nova Film and B&C Content
- AGBO’s Angela Russo-Otstot (producer and chief creative officer) says the team is leaning into a South Korean lens for this chapter, pairing Don Lee with director Lee Sang-yong to broaden the franchise’s identity.
How it fits into the bigger Extraction universe
TYGO is part of Netflix and AGBO’s expanding plan for Extraction. The franchise kicked off with Extraction in 2020 and kept the momentum going with Extraction 2 in 2023. The movies themselves are based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, Joe Russo, and Anthony Russo.
And TYGO isn’t the only new branch. There’s also a separate series in development, set in Libya and starring Natalie Dormer, Omar Sy, and Boyd Holbrook. No dates yet, but clearly the goal is to turn Extraction into more than just a two-movie playground.
Short version: Netflix is building out a shared action universe, and TYGO looks like the bruiser that plants a flag in Korea. No release window yet, but between Don Lee headlining and a team that knows its way around a punch, this one’s firmly on the radar.
