One of the most hated characters got a disappointing finale.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the fifth feature-length installment in the franchise and the last starring the legendary Harrison Ford, is just one day away from being released in American theaters.

However, some have already seen the movie when it was screened at Cannes in May, and many of the leaked plot details seem highly controversial to fans.

In the series' previous installments, one of the most hated characters was Shia LaBeouf's Mutt Williams. First introduced in The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Mutt is the illegitimate son of Indy and Marion, and many viewers found the character overly uncharismatic — and also an unworthy successor to his father. Even George Lucas, who had originally planned to make Mutt a new Indiana Jones, later abandoned the idea.

So what happens to Mutt in the franchise's final installment?

Well, as a matter of fact… nothing. By the time of The Dial of Destiny, which takes place in 1969, Mutt Williams is already dead. Apparently, the writers were aware that fans hated the character and the movies he appeared in, so they decided to kill Mutt off-screen. According to the story, he fought in Vietnam and died in action.

'For all his faults, Lucas never hit Jar Jar Binks with a truck because people didn't like the Phantom Menace,' one fan said, comparing Mutt to Jar Jar Binks from the first episode of Star Wars, arguably the most hated character of the entire film series.

All in all, fans thought that killing Mutt off-screen was a lazy move on the part of the writers, and many compared it to the way Indy's father, Sean Connery's Professor Henry Jones Sr., was written out of the story. As Connery refused to reprise the role in The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the script simply mentioned that the character had died before the events of the movie.

'Have him with his own family, running a garage somewhere on the other side of America,' a Redditor suggested, echoing the sentiment of many fans who'd rather see Mutt alive, but not involved in his father's adventures.

Despite this disappointing revelation about Mutt Williams' fate, there is doubt that Harrison Ford's brilliant acting will once again make the new Indiana Jones movie an emotional and powerful experience.

The Dial of Destiny is set to premiere in US theaters tomorrow, on June 30, 2023.
