Spoilers: Here's What Heartstopper Season 3 Going to Be About
Where are the beloved characters heading?
Fans of Netflix's Heartstopper were pleased with how the characters changed and matured in the recently released Season 2. Dealing with their not-always-supportive parents and learning to accept their sexuality, Charlie and Nick have developed an even deeper, more romantic relationship with one another, and are slowly getting ready to move into adulthood after their high school days are over.
Now fans are wondering: what's in store for our favorite characters in the upcoming Season 3?
Speaking on Netflix Tudum last fall, Alice Oseman, the author of the Heartstopper graphic novel who also serves as the series' writer, talked about Season 2 and said that there were enough new storylines to make the show's script coherent and full.
'We had a good foundation [with Heartstopper Volume 3], but there's not enough in the book to [make] a whole season of TV. There had to be a lot of creation of new stuff, which I was really excited about,' Oseman said at the time.
Since Season 2 is primarily based on the third volume of the novel, we can expect a future season to focus on specific storylines.
First of all, Charlie will try to say those all-important three words. Of course, this was already obvious, but it fits perfectly with last season's finale, as both he and Nick vowed to be honest with each other, and the only thing missing in their conversation was saying 'I love you.'
Also, Volume 4 is largely built around overcoming mental problems, including depression and self-harm. Charlie in particular will face a severe eating disorder, but Nick will support him and help his boyfriend overcome the condition.
Fans are also hoping that Season 3 will put more emphasis on Charlie and Nick's friends.
'Darcy going to live with Tara to avoid her homophobic mother, and Elle starting at her new art school so we can spend more time getting to know Naomi and Felix,' one of the fans on Reddit suggested.
And then, it's highly likely that the lighter moments of the novel, such as a trip to the beach, therapy, and of course, the long-awaited confession, will be carried over into the adaptation.
Season 3 is currently in the scripting stage, so filming may begin within the next few months. However, there is a risk that the series will be postponed due to the ongoing WGA and SAG strikes, as Olivia Colman, who plays Nick's mother, is a member of the Actors' Guild.
But if the strikes don't impede the production, we can expect to see the continuation of Nick and Charlie's love story as early as 2024.
