Apparently, the audience jumped into conclusions at the dawn of the series.

Now that Max's The Idol is over, we can talk about it in its entirety. Produced by The Weeknd, the new show premiered in early June and turned out to be a major disappointment for fans who had extremely high hopes for their favourite singer's production. What The Idol definitely succeeded at, though, was stirring controversy from the very first episode.

The show is centred on Jocelyn, an up-and-coming pop star portrayed by Lily-Rose Depp, and depicts the dark side of show business in a highly graphic and exaggerated manner, which puts off many viewers. It follows Jocelyn's career and toxic relationship with the manipulative cult leader Tedros, portrayed by The Weeknd.

The Idol also featured Blackpink's Jennie in a supporting role. In the first episode, there is a scene where she performs some stunning choreography in the background, drawing viewers' attention from the main characters. Jennie got a lot of praise for that performance, and many people said she was the best part of the show. However, as the story progressed, Jennie's character got progressively less interesting.

While Jennie is great at singing and dancing, acting doesn't seem to be her forte. Thus, the character she portrayed on The Idol, Dyanne, ended up coming across as shallow, bland, and devoid of emotion.

'I like Jennie and keep up with kpop, but I’m honestly not super impressed with her acting performance here ESPECIALLY in the last episode. In the elevator (trying not to spoil anything) and in the record label, after hearing what she hears she has basically no real reaction to it. It was just awkward to watch,' a Redditor wrote.

In fact, quite a few viewers confessed to losing interest in Jennie's character, who grew ever less entertaining as the show progressed, adding little to the already mediocre story.

'I thought her character was pretty intriguing at first, with almost like a double agent potential. And she is obviously beautiful. But as the show went on she got less interesting and (maybe intentionally?) somehow less appealing,' another Redditor shared.

Given how divided audiences have been about The Idol, its future is up in the air, as is the future of Jennie's character in it, but if you're really into it, you can always rewatch it on Max, where all the episodes are now available for on-demand streaming.
