Sophie Turner’s Tomb Raider Series Levels Up With Harry Potter Star Jason Isaacs
Amazon’s Tomb Raider series levels up: Jason Isaacs joins Sophie Turner, Alien icon Sigourney Weaver is in talks, and Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge is set to helm.
Amazon's Tomb Raider series just added another familiar face, and the cast is starting to look like a Comic-Con fever dream in the best way.
- Sophie Turner is leading the show as Lara Croft.
- Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter, The White Lotus) has joined the cast; his role is being kept quiet for now (per Deadline).
- Sigourney Weaver, yes, the Alien icon herself, is in talks to join.
- Phoebe Waller-Bridge is steering the adaptation for Amazon, writing and executive producing.
- Chad Hodge and Shogun director Jonathan Van Tulleken are also on board.
- Timeline: announced in 2022, officially greenlit last year, and filming is locked for January 19, 2026.
- No premiere date yet, but a late 2027 or early 2028 window makes the most sense.
So, who is everyone playing?
Turner is Lara Croft. That much is clear. As for Jason Isaacs, Amazon is keeping his character under wraps for now, which is a very studio move. If Sigourney Weaver closes her deal, expect the internet to do a week of casting theories before we even see a frame.
Creative team check-in
Phoebe Waller-Bridge is leading the charge here for Amazon, and she is writing and executive producing the series, which should give this thing a voice beyond the usual grim-n-gritty action template. Chad Hodge is involved, and Jonathan Van Tulleken, who directed on Shogun, is part of the creative mix. It is a strong lineup for a property that has been weirdly tough to crack in live action.
The Tomb Raider problem (and why this might fix it)
On consoles, Tomb Raider is a classic. On the big screen, the track record is... not thrilling. But the whole 'video game curse' talking point is basically retired at this point. Sonic is a bona fide movie franchise, HBO's The Last of Us worked, WB's Mortal Kombat keeps punching, and the Mario movie turned the box office into a warp pipe. If Amazon sticks the landing, Lara could finally join the winners column.
Where things stand
The show was first announced back in 2022, officially got the green light last year, and cameras start rolling on January 19, 2026. With production gearing up, expect more concrete character and plot details to shake loose as we get closer. No release date yet, but late 2027 or early 2028 feels realistic given that schedule.
'I am so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team... Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out... Croft is coming.'
- Phoebe Waller-Bridge, speaking to Screen Rant
Short version: great lead, intriguing supporting cast, legit creative team, and a production start date on the books. I am cautiously optimistic. Now let Lara raid.
