Thanks to the success of Jane the Virgin, Gina Rodriguez became one of the most popular Latina actresses out there, and for good reason, as her upbeat yet complex portrayal of the main character perfectly proved how great of a performer she actually is. However, since the show ended in 2019, Rodriguez has simply disappeared from Hollywood, only appearing in some really questionable projects.

At first, fans were a bit surprised because most of them were sure that Rodriguez had made a real name for herself on the show and that she would never have a problem landing big roles. However, it seems that there is a reason for Rodriguez's exclusion from the spotlight.

A controversial persona

Even though not many people know about Rodriguez's controversies, she has actually caused quite a few of them, each time pushing her career back a bit. First, Rodriguez was widely criticized for giving a harsh response to a woman asking for money in her Twitter replies, leading some people to wonder why the actress decided to respond to the woman at all.

But that's far from her biggest offense, as she once decided to host a live stream where she rapped to some popular hip-hop songs and blatantly said the N-word. Yikes.

Though Rodriguez tried to explain herself by saying that she was a dark-skinned Latina and had the right to say the word, it only made matters worse, with people accusing her of racism and being tone-deaf to her offense.

The current career

After that, Rodriguez rarely appeared in any significant movies, with the recently released Spy Kids: Armageddon being her most hyped project since the end of Jane the Virgin.

However, it looks like Rodriguez is coming back, as ABC's new sitcom Not Dead Yet starring the actress proved to be a hit in its first season and was quickly renewed for a second.

Who knows, maybe in a few years Rodriguez will be back on top of the world.
