So, Dakota Johnson & Riley Keough Are BFFs Now? 2023 Continues to Surprise
They've been friends for longer than you think.
Learning that two of your favorite stars are actually friends in real life always comes as a pleasant surprise. However, celebrity relationships are often fickle and fragile, so it's even more rewarding to know that some of the stars' friendships are time-tested.
As it turns out, Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith's daughter and the star of the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise, Dakota Johnson is good friends with actress Riley Keough. The latter also comes from a famous family: her mother is singer-songwriter Lisa Marie Presley, the daughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, and her father is musician Danny Keough.
Keough is best known for her roles in the award-winning anthology series The Girlfriend Experience, Steven Soderbergh's Logan Lucky, and Amazon Prime Video's The Terminal List and Daisy Jones & the Six. The latter miniseries, which premiered this string, revolves around the eponymous fictional rock band from the 1970s. Remarkably, Riley herself once played in a musical band, and Dakota Johnson was an integral part of it too.
The actresses reportedly met at a parking lot when they were just 16. Both say they felt an instant connection to one another, bonding over their experience of growing up in celebrity families.
'It was like finding a soulmate. When I met her, I felt this thing that is so impossible to articulate, growing up in a famous family. There was this solidarity. Understanding,' Dakota Johnson told Vanity Fair.
Thanks to Johnson and Keough's friendship, the girls' mothers bonded as well, and all four of them often spent time together (unfortunately, Riley's mother passed away in January of this year).
Several years after their first meeting, Dakota and Riley launched a band together. As its name Folky Porn suggests, that wasn't a serious musical endeavor but rather a 'joke band.'
'When we were 19, we started a joke band called Folky Porn. Riley and I both had blond hair. We were hiding out in New York after breakups. We would do three-part harmonies with my brother, Alexander, on Hank Williams songs and John Prine songs, and we'd film them on Photo Booth. Thousands and thousands of takes,' Johnson recalled.
Eighteen years forward, the two actresses' friendship is strong as ever. For their fans, it's incredibly heartwarming to know that Dakota and Riley have carried their great relationship from their teens into their adult life, without losing any of that original connection.
We're hoping that the stars will stay close in the years to come and may even share the screen together — like legendary Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin often do.
