Shōgun Season 2 Release Date Just Got A Major Upgrade
Cameras are rolling on Shogun Season 2 as Hulu kicks off production, with a fresh release window coming into focus and fan anticipation surging.
Shogun is officially back in action. Cameras are rolling on Season 2, which is a pretty wild twist for a show that was pitched as a one-and-done adaptation. Nearly two years after the series debuted, Hulu has put the historical epic back into production — and yes, the big guns are back.
Production is underway — right on schedule
Filming has started in Vancouver and is expected to run for roughly six months. This lines up with what was floated late last year: a January 2026 start. Local outlets have already spotted the production in and around Port Moody, including that old Flavelle Sawmill site by Rocky Point, and there are fresh set photos of large-scale period builds to prove it.
Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis are on set, back as Toranaga and Blackthorne, with Season 2 jumping about 10 years after the events of Season 1. For a series that already wrapped James Clavell’s novel in full, that’s a big swing into new territory — the kind of pivot that happens when a so-called limited series turns into a hit. Hulu didn’t just order Season 2; they also greenlit Season 3.
What are they actually making?
Plot details are locked up tight. Since the book’s story is complete, these new episodes are all-original, crafted by the returning writing team led by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks. Expect more specifics once production gets deeper into the shoot.
Who’s in the mix
- New additions: Masataka Kubota as Hyuga, Jun Kunimura as Goda, Sho Kaneta as Hidenobu, Asami Kizukawa as Aya, and Takaaki Enoki as Lord Ito.
- Returning players: Shinnosuke Abe, Yuko Miyamoto, Fumi Nikaido, Eita Okuno, Yuka Kouri, Yoriko Doguchi, Tommy Bastow, and Hiroto Kanai.
When to expect it
No premiere date yet. If post-production moves fast, late 2026 is in play; if not, pencil in 2027. Either way, after two years off, the ship has definitely left the harbor.
