We know a new series is in the works, but details are scarce.

Howdy, partners! It wasn't long ago that fans of the cowboy showdown set in modern-day Montana, Yellowstone, received the promising news that the second part of Season 5 would be released as early as November 2023.

While this is certainly fantastic news, it is also a cause for sadness, as the new episodes will be the final, concluding chapter of the current iteration of Yellowstone led by Kevin Costner's John Dutton.

However, the franchise has no intention of ending with the original series, as creator Taylor Sheridan continues to tell the story through various spin-offs. And while Paramount is likely trying to amass even more millions for production budgets and remuneration for the star-studded cast of all these shows, Sheridan shared some details about an upcoming project starring none other than Matthew McConaughey himself.

Rumours about McConaughey's possible involvement in a new Sheridan-produced series surfaced amid the conflict between Sheridan and Kevin Costner stemming from the latter's decision to focus on his own western project, Horizon, which resulted in him refusing to continue working on Yellowstone and even demanding that the shooting time for both the first and second parts of Season 5 be shortened.

It's too early to get excited, though, as we won't be seeing the Dallas Buyers Club star back in his cowboy hat anytime soon. While McConaughey declined to elaborate on the future spin-off and the status of negotiations because he's currently filming for another project, some details were shared by Sheridan himself.

'[Matthew] seems like a natural fit. We had a few conversations over the years, and spitballed a few ideas,' he said. 'Then he started watching Yellowstone and responded to it. He was like, "I want to do that." And by "that" he meant diving into a raw world clashing up against the modern world. And then I said, "Buddy, that we can do."'

Apart from the upcoming 6666, set in modern-day Texas, all the other series in the franchise are prequels. The new project with McConaughey, however, will be a sequel, opening a new chapter in the story of Yellowstone. But Sheridan has indicated it will be a stand-alone story with a new cast and setting.

'There are lots of places where a way of life that existed for 150 years is slamming against a new way of life, but the challenges are completely different. There are a lot of places you can tell this story,' Sheridan said.

The series is in the early stages of development, so it is unknown whether the surviving Yellowstone characters will appear in the spin-off.
