The electric chemistry could have made the surprising pairing an endgame. But the writers decided otherwise.

Sex Education has aired its final fourth season, and now we can look back at the show as a whole and reflect on the journey of its protagonist, Otis Milburn, and his tumultuous love life.

It was probably unintentional at first, but Season 3 presented the biggest question of the show: who should be Otis' endgame, Meave or Ruby?

The love triangle was recently highlighted in the Netflix promo video, and the fan reaction helps to draw a clear conclusion.

Rotis > Motis

While Motis (Maeve & Otis) was gradually developing from day one, Rotis (Ruby & Otis) stormed into the storyline like a breath of fresh air, blowing up social media and fan discussions in just a few episodes.

The pairing was unexpected and different, the dynamic of a popular girl and a humble guy - compelling, the chemistry between the actors and the characters - off the charts.

Although unlikely at first, Ruby and Otis hit it off and proved to be a compatible, fun and compelling couple. Whereas with Maeve there was a lot of hardship at every step of the way, Ruby and Otis brought out the best in each other.

She helped him become more outgoing and confident, while he made her more open and cracked her mean shell. The way Ruby changed over the course of Seasons 3 and 4 made her one of the best characters on the show.

More than that, while Maeve would never sacrifice her writing dream and personal growth for a relationship, which is a welcome part of her arc, Ruby showed that she was willing to lower her standards for Otis. And in Ruby's world, her high standards are the most precious thing she has.

Creators Ruined Rotis

All in all, Rotis was so great together, that the only reason why not all Sex Education fans flipped to shipping them seems to be the fact that the writers never wanted us to. They stuck with Motis and broke up Otis and Ruby very quickly, despite the obvious limitless potential of Rotis.

On top of that, in Season 4, the creators took away any chance of the couple finding their way to each other in the future by showing Otis being mean and inconsiderate to Ruby, and Ruby deciding she was better off without him. Good for her, but saddening for all the Rotis shippers.

Are you disappointed that Otis didn't end up with Ruby?
