Seth MacFarlane Teases The Orville Season 4: What It Could Mean
The Orville just delivered its most encouraging update in ages.
The Orville did a funny thing. It launched in 2017 as a winky Star Trek riff, then quietly morphed into a sincere, pulpy sci-fi saga that stood on its own by the time it moved to Hulu as The Orville: New Horizons in 2022. And then... radio silence. Now there is finally movement, and it is the oddly encouraging kind: the show is written, the holdup is time.
Season 4 exists — on paper
While out promoting season 2 of Ted, Seth MacFarlane finally gave fans something tangible to hold onto. He did not hedge:
"I will be honest with you: Season four is written. It is just a question of when we have the time to produce it."
He doubled down on where things stand behind the scenes:
"The 10 scripts are done. I am the problem. It is a matter of when I can make that my year, with all the other stuff we have in the works. But we can hit the ground running when it happens."
Between Family Guy, American Dad, and Ted, MacFarlane is juggling a lot, so the schedule bottleneck tracks. Even so, this is the most optimistic update in ages for fans who were ready to call it.
The mixed signals up to now
The status of a fourth season has been fuzzy for a while, with different folks from the show saying very different things. Back in April 2025, Adrianne Palicki (Kelly Grayson) sounded far from certain. Her read on it hinged on the 2023 writers strikes stopping whatever momentum there was:
"You know, right before the 2023 writers strikes, that was definitely a conversation that Seth and I had. He called me and asked if I would do it, and it was a possibility, and then the strikes happened. It kind of just went away. I know a lot of people are disappointed about that, but as of now, I do not know that there is going to be a fourth season."
MacFarlane clearly still cares about the show, though. He writes a lot of episodes himself and even put out a novella, The Orville: Sympathy for the Devil, during New Horizons. He has also publicly asked for more hopeful television in general, which fits the show to a T.
Where New Horizons left the story
New Horizons closed with an easygoing capper of an episode that could serve as a series finale in a pinch, yet the door is wide open. A few big pieces were still sliding into place:
- The Planetary Union (very Federation-adjacent) formed a brand-new alliance with the robotic Kaylon, who had been the show’s primary antagonists until that point.
- The Moclan (whose culture is aggressively sexist) teamed up with the zealously religious Krill, giving the Union a clear, hostile front to deal with going forward.
So, when?
Now it is less about if and more about when MacFarlane can clear the decks and make the season. He says the writers room already did its job; production just needs the greenlight from his calendar.
In the meantime, if you want a fresh dose of MacFarlane, all eight episodes of Ted season 2 hit Peacock on March 5.
