Set-It-and-Forget-It French-Style Casserole: Ground Meat and Potatoes Under a Velvety Cheese Blanket — Effortless and Incredibly Juicy
Weeknight miracle: a self-cooking casserole of ground meat, potatoes, onion, tomatoes, and a creamy cheese-and-sour cream topping — simple and brilliant.
This is that weeknight hero that practically cooks itself: a layered casserole of seasoned minced meat, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, and a plush sour cream and cheese top. It is a streamlined riff on the classic French-style baked meat, trading whole cuts for mince and mayo for sour cream. You stack, you bake, you eat. Simple, a little indulgent, and very satisfying.
What you need
- Minced meat (any) - 300 g
- Potatoes - 3-4
- Onions - 1-2
- Tomatoes - 1-2
- Cheese - 100-150 g
- Sour cream - 150 g
- Milk - 50 ml
- Garlic - 3-4 cloves
- Salt, black pepper, vegetable oil - to taste
- Optional: a dried herb blend
How to make it
Heat the oven to 180°C (about 350°F). Lightly oil a baking dish.
Season the minced meat with salt and black pepper. Add finely minced garlic and the milk, then mix until evenly combined.
Slice the potatoes into rounds or half-moons. Season with salt and pepper, add 3-4 tablespoons of vegetable oil and, if you like, a pinch of dried herbs. Toss so every slice is lightly coated.
Slice the onions into thin half-rings. Cut the tomatoes into rounds or half-moons. Grate the cheese and stir it together with the sour cream until you have a smooth, spreadable mixture.
Build the casserole in layers: potatoes first, then the onions, then the minced meat, then the tomatoes. Spread the sour cream and cheese mixture over the top so it covers everything in a generous blanket.
Slide the dish into the hot oven and bake for about 60 minutes. If the top starts browning too fast before the time is up, cover the dish loosely with foil. It is ready when the potatoes are tender all the way through.
To serve
Spoon it out hot, while the top is soft and melty, and pair with a simple vegetable salad. The result is a cozy, all-in-one casserole with juicy tomatoes and a silky, golden cap of cheese that makes the whole thing feel a little special for the effort required.
