The critically acclaimed superhero series, The Boys, is gearing up for its highly anticipated 4th season, due to be released in early 2024.

Yet after the unforgettable events of Season 3, fans are left wondering if the upcoming season can surpass its predecessor. Will this latest installment continue to be bigger and better than its last?

[Warning: Season 3 spoilers ahead]

Season 3 recap

The last season saw tensions between The Boys and the corrupt superhero team, The Seven, reach new heights. With the arrival of Soldier Boy, a legendary superhero from the past, it seemed there was a chance to finally take down Homelander. Meanwhile, Butcher struggled to protect Homelander's son, Ryan, while Stormfront's real nature was revealed, leading to her demise.

The season finale ended in a climactic showdown that showed Soldier Boy's true colors, along with some other plot twists, including Ryan unexpectedly siding with his father, Homelander. Going into the next season, the stage has certainly been set for an uncertain future for both The Boys and The Seven.

What could this mean for the next season?

The season 3 finale introduced significant changes that will likely shape the narrative of the next season. With the demise of Black Noir, and also potentially Maeve now that she is in a depowered state, there is a possibility each will be replaced with entirely new characters. As for Soldier Boy, his storage placement suggests a potential focus on a new threat for The Boys.

The remaining members of The Seven will also likely face some personal challenges as Homelander continues to embrace his true self. The absence of Starlight creates room for new members or further conflicts. Additionally, the introduction of Victoria Neuman as a superpowered politician adds intriguing storytelling opportunities. Season 4 is sure to hold numerous possibilities; however, can it top the high bar set by Season 3.

What the fans expect from Season 4

Opinions on season 3, especially leading into 4, vary among the show's fan base. Some have questioned how long the series can keep its momentum going of intensity and shock factor. In contrast, others seem confident in The Boys' ability to sustain its high energy and remain entertaining. One fan optimistically responded to doubts around the next season on Reddit, saying, 'Why wouldn't it be better than season 3? This show obviously hasn't peaked yet in its story and production value'.

Yet surprisingly, other viewers admit to being not overly impressed by the decisions made in last season's finale. Although they still support the show's continuation all the same. One Redditor admitted, 'I almost don't want to see season 4. But who am I kidding? Shit is awesome'.

Overall many fans agreed that as long as the next season does a better job of 'sticking the landing,' is less afraid to kill characters, and doesn't sacrifice the status quo for the sake of the plot, it will do an excellent job of keeping up with its fans' high expectations.
