The fans agree; the penultimate season was when Supernatural was at its coolest.

Few shows have achieved the kind of cult following that Supernatural managed over its 15 seasons. However, the final season of this beloved show has been a point of contention among fans since its release. Many argue that it should have been season 14 that marked the end of the Winchester brothers' epic journey. The 14th season's finale provided a grand climax that showcased the brothers at their best, going out with a bang and not a whimper.

The penultimate episode of season 14, titled 'Moriah,' deals with the consequences of Jack previously evading capture. With the timely appearance of the all-powerful Chuck, God attempts to convince the brothers that he must be stopped for good. However, when the moment comes, Dean refuses to take Jack's life. This inadvertently exposes Chuck's true nature as the grand architect; and a malevolent one at that.

Frustrated at the Winchesters, Chuck decides to trigger the apocalypse on Earth, killing Jack himself and opening the gates of hell. The final moments are of Sam, Dean, and Cas preparing to fend off the souls of the dead as possessed corpses rise around them, leaving the episode on a suspenseful cliffhanger of an epic showdown.

While some fans might not favor ambiguous series endings, the concept of the three characters taking on the combined might of hell's souls together is undeniably captivating. The finale could have been an imaginative and fitting conclusion to the saga, and far more intriguing than the direction season 15 eventually took.

Instead, the final season saw the Winchester brothers scrambling to confront the almighty Chuck. Although it did feature some entertaining cameos, primarily, the season grappled with tying up loose ends. The brothers even lost their luck in one episode, making them no longer the heroes of fortune they had always been.

But compared to the previous seasons ending, with its sudden twist, the impending apocalypse, and a montage of horrors set to the gritty tones of 'God Was Never On Your Side' by Motorhead… it doesn't get much cooler than that.

Surprisingly, it's not uncommon to find many Supernatural fans also wonder about the penultimate season finale. On the r/Supernatural subreddit, a thread reveals a common longing for the show to have wrapped up with Moriah.

One user captures the sentiment perfectly: 'The reveal of it was Chuck all along with the song and the graves exploding... it was truly epic.' Another fan lauds the episode as 'one of the best finales and music cues,' applauding its blend of shock and awe. The episode's impact even conjured memories of other iconic finales, as one fan compared it to Joss Whedon's 'Angel' series finale.

While Supernatural ultimately handled its ending differently than many may have expected, season 14 still gave its fans one last big moment, where we still believed the Winchesters could take on anything. And even if they weren't to have won, what's cooler than going down in one last blaze of glory.
