Will Amazon Prime Video bring Scarpetta back for a second season or call time of death? Elizabeth Sarnoff’s forensic thriller trails pathologist Kay as she hunts serial killers with cutting-edge tech—here’s what to know about Season 2’s fate.

Prime Video just rolled out Scarpetta, and yes, the obvious question is already floating around: are we getting a Season 2? Short answer: it is happening. Slightly longer answer: it was locked in from day one.

Season 2 status

Scarpetta was given a two-season order right out of the gate. So no last-minute renewal drama here; Season 2 was part of the plan from the start.

How this show actually got made

There is a very Hollywood email at the center of this one. Jamie Lee Curtis — who plays Dorothy on the show and also serves as an executive producer — helped push Scarpetta over the finish line by connecting Patricia Cornwell's literary agent, Esther, with Jason Blum, the Blumhouse Productions founder. The email Curtis sent was not subtle.

"I’m introducing Esther here, let’s f**king go!"

From there, Curtis got proactive about the rights. She went straight to Patricia Cornwell to see who had Scarpetta locked down. The answer: nobody. Which is wild, considering how long those books have been sitting right there for TV to grab.

"Who has the rights to Scarpetta right now?"

With that door wide open, Curtis looped in Jason Blum and moved to buy the books and develop them for television. So if the show feels like a clean, fully packaged launch, that is because the creative and business pieces clicked into place unusually fast.

What the show is

Created by Elizabeth Sarnoff, Scarpetta follows Kay, a brilliant forensic pathologist who bounces between cities to crack cases and hunt serial killers. The hook is the tech — lots of forensic toys in play — but the heart of it is the pressure Kay is under as the high-profile case that made her name starts to threaten everything else. The show leans into both sides: the glossy procedural machinery and the messy family drama running alongside it.

Who is in it

  • Nicole Kidman
  • Jamie Lee Curtis (as Dorothy)
  • Ariana DeBose
  • Bobby Cannavale
  • Simon Baker

Bottom line

If you are settling into Season 1 and wondering whether to invest, go ahead. Prime Video already committed to two seasons, so Scarpetta will be sticking around. And if you are curious how it all got moving so fast, chalk it up to an A-list email, some smart timing on the rights, and a story that threads forensic spectacle with character scars — which, conveniently, is exactly what TV likes right now.
