Her character wasn't there, and neither was the actress.

Centered on the life-long friendship between Tully Hart (Katherine Heigl) and Kate Mularkey (Sarah Chalke), Netflix's Firefly Lane is a kind and heartwarming story with a bittersweet ending. The drama series' finale, which aired on April 27, depicts the last days in the life of Kate as she succumbs to cancer, and Tully is there by her side, supporting her best friend and trying to cope with her impending loss.

In a recent interview with The Wrap, Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke talked about their experiences on the set of Firefly Lane, and some of Chalke's comments were especially interesting for fans.

The actress revealed that the role hit close to home for her because her aunt also died from cancer when she was 24. As the story was moving towards the conclusion, Sarah felt trepidation as she prepared to portray her character dying. Besides, Kate was also a mother who wouldn't see her daughter grow up. Of course, this resonated strongly with the actress, who is also a mother of two.

In addition to these revelations, Chalke mentioned one surprising detail about filming.

After her character died in the last episode, the action was shown from her friend's point of view. During Kate's funeral service, Tully stayed outside the church, holding back her tears and dancing to ABBA's 'Dancing Queen,' thus celebrating the memory of her late friend. Although Chalke was absent in that final scene, you would expect her to be somewhere around the set on the filming day, but the actress revealed that she wasn't actually there.

'I love that you feel like the juxtaposition of the pain of this funeral, which I love that we didn't go inside, you stay outside with [Tully], and she's dancing, and you have this beautiful song that meant so much to both of them and to their relationship,' the actress said.

Both Sarah Chalke and Katherine Heigl were very much invested in their characters, and the fact that Sarah wasn't on the set probably helped her co-star deliver her best performance in that final scene.

Fans also agree with Chalke in that not going inside the church was the right decision on the part of the writers, as it allowed to end the story on a high note and show that the characters' friendship will live on even after Kate's death.
