Sarah Beth Leaves American Idol, Fans Blame Katy Perry's 'Mom-Shaming' Joke
One of season 21's frontrunners brought her journey to an abrupt end.
Every year, American Idol introduces dozens of talented singers to its millions of viewers, and only the best of them find their way into the competition itself, as the judges pick only the most gifted contestants to potentially become future American Idols.
And it seems that even the judges' support for a contestant is sometimes not enough to keep them in the competition, as Sarah Beth just announced her decision to leave American Idol after a strong and popular performance at Hollywood Week.
After wowing the judges and viewers with a powerful rendition of The Police's "Roxanne," Beth shocked everyone with the announcement that she decided to withdraw from the competition and return home to care for her three children.
While the judges, including Katy Perry, tried to persuade her to stay, Beth was adamant in her decision, and many fans believe that the superstar singer herself was to blame for forcing Beth to leave the competition so early.
During the auditions for season 21, Perry shocked viewers with an unexpected "mom-shaming" moment, joking that she needed to lie down on the table after hearing that Beth had three children at the age of 25. Both fans and Beth were offended by this and called Perry out for her shameful comments and lack of support for the young singer.
While Perry later tried to patch things up, it seems that Beth wasn't having it and decided to leave the competition early.
As we can see from comments on the Internet, the audience is quite disgusted with the way Perry behaved. One fan complained, "I enjoy Katy Perry but her comments to Beth had my guts twisted in knots," and another person said they would "turn [American Idol] off until Katy Perry leaves."
While most fans support Beth's decision, some of them are worried about her, saying that she could have at least made it to the Top 5 this season. And because she left, her dreams of becoming a professional singer may never come true, and that doesn't sit well with the fandom, who wish all the best to the young mother.
Perhaps Beth will enter another singing competition later this year where the judges won't treat her like Perry — and fans will certainly be rooting for her!
