Samuel L. Jackson’s Tulsa King Spinoff Unveils New Title as Taylor Sheridan Sets the Stage
Tulsa King is leveling up: the Samuel L. Jackson-led spinoff has been overhauled with a new title, an official episode count, and a bigger creative hand from co-creator Taylor Sheridan.
The Tulsa King universe just leveled up. Samuel L. Jackson's spin-off is not only real, it just got a new name, a new location, and a whole lot more Taylor Sheridan. If you like it when a creator grabs the wheel and floors it, this is that.
New title, new turf
What was announced as 'NOLA King' is now called 'Frisco King.' The story is no longer set in New Orleans; it has moved to Frisco, Texas. On top of that shift, Sheridan is writing the entire first season — all eight episodes — himself. That is a big swing compared to the original plan, which started with a pilot script from Dave Erickson.
- Title change: 'NOLA King' is now 'Frisco King'
- Setting shift: from New Orleans to Frisco, Texas
- Scope jump: Taylor Sheridan will write all 8 episodes of Season 1
- Previous plan: a pilot by Dave Erickson, who exited the project in July 2025
- Showrunner status: still unclear, and not every Sheridan series uses one
- Production: casting is underway; filming starts in late March in Fort Worth, Texas
Sheridan takes the wheel
Sheridan co-wrote the Tulsa King pilot, but this time he is all-in on the spin-off. Studio brass are clearly happy about it.
'Having Taylor write the entire season will bring to life Samuel L. Jackson's iconic character and be a treat for fans,' said Paramount Television Studios president Matt Thunell.
'Having Samuel L. Jackson step into this universe is a testament to the scale and ambition of the storytelling Taylor is crafting. We're thrilled to expand this storyline with such a powerhouse creative team and cast on Paramount+,' added Jane Wiseman, who heads Originals at the streamer.
Where the character fits in
Jackson's character, Russell Lee Washington Jr., first appeared during Tulsa King's third season and made enough of a dent to spin off into his own series. Now the franchise is handing that character to Sheridan for a full-season run, a clear sign the team is treating this as a major pillar and not a side quest.
