Sam Already Knows How Outlander Will End, but Caitriona Doesn't, Surprisingly
'I actually like not knowing.'
Although the dispute between SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP, and thus the strikes, is still ongoing, the WGA reached an agreement with the studios on their demands and officially ended the strikes on September 27. This means that script development on many important projects will resume very soon!
This is great news for Outlander fans, because while we wait for Season 7 Part 2, which will be released sometime in 2024, the writers can start working on the script for Season 8, the final chapter in the live-action love story between Claire and Jamie. What's more, Jamie's actor, Sam Heughan, apparently already knows how the series will end. Claire's actor, Caitríona Balfe, however, has no clue at all.
The final season
It has been announced that Season 8 will be the last for Outlander. For us fans, of course, this fact is unbelievable, because we are always short of content on our favorite time-traveling fantasy drama!
The reason is that Diana Gabaldon is still working on the book series. So far, 9 novels have been published and the last one (still untitled) is being written. According to the author, the book will be published somewhere between 2024 and 2026, so the writers will simply not be able to adapt the script in time for the new season. Of course, we do not need another Game of Thrones, so the Outlander team will continue to consult with Gabaldon about completing the story.
Only three people know how it ends
On June 1, World Outlander Day, Caitríona Balfe and executive producer Maril Davis attended the ATX Television Festival, an industry and fan event in Austin, Texas. They shared who in the Outlander family knows in advance how the television story will end.
Besides Gabaldon, there were apparently only two people, Davis and Sam Heughan. And according to Caitríona, Sam deftly dodged all the questions.
'He smugly holds it over me all the time,' she joked. 'To be honest, I actually like not knowing.'
As Maril revealed, the ending is not even known to co-executive producer Matthew B. Roberts, who, like Caitríona, prefers to wait in suspense for the twist.
At the same time, the executive pointed out that she herself wasn't sure how Sam knew about the ending.
'I keep meaning to ask Sam about it because he's like, "I know the ending." But, I'm like "what the f--k does that mean?" I'm not sure I get it,' she said, laughing.
