Russell Brand Breaks Silence on Katy Perry’s Justin Trudeau Romance, 13 Years After Their Divorce
Thirteen years after their split, Russell Brand finally weighed in on ex-wife Katy Perry’s rumored relationship with Justin Trudeau, dropping a pointed take at a live event that sent the internet spinning.
Russell Brand popped up with some thoughts on his ex-wife Katy Perry and her headline-making romance with Justin Trudeau. He did it on stage, of course, and he did not exactly soft-pedal it.
What Brand said on stage
At a Turning Point USA event in Phoenix, Brand brought up Perry, their past, and her current love life. He made sure the room (and apparently her mom, who he said was in attendance) knew he still has affection for his ex. Then he pivoted to the new guy and fired a shot.
"Look, Katy Perry, I was married to her. I love her still, and I'm glad that her mom's in the room to hear me say this. But look. I was okay with Orlando Bloom, but Justin Trudeau? Come on, man! Don't put me in a category with that guy! That globalist stooge."
Yes, that is the quote. Brand is 50 now, and clearly still very comfortable playing to the crowd.
Quick rewind: Brand and Perry, the fast version
- Mid-2009: They first met when Perry shot a cameo for Brand's movie Get Him to the Greek (the cameo was later cut).
- September 2009: They reconnected at the MTV Video Music Awards and started dating.
- New Year's Eve: They got engaged soon after.
- October 23, 2010: They married near the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan, India.
- Late 2011: Brand filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences; it was finalized in July 2012.
Where Perry is now
Perry is currently going strong with Canadian politician Justin Trudeau. She essentially made it Instagram-official by posting photos from a trip they took to Japan. This comes after her split from former fiance Orlando Bloom earlier this year — a name Brand specifically said he was "okay with" in contrast to Trudeau.
As for how Perry and Trudeau got serious, a People source put it pretty simply: the only reason it became real is that Trudeau kept showing up. According to the source, she wasn't looking to date when they first hung out, wasn't hunting for a boyfriend, and the relationship ended up being an "exciting surprise" for her because he was consistent and persistent.
So, to recap: Brand still says he loves Perry, he approved of Bloom, he is decidedly not a Trudeau guy, and he said all of this from a political-event stage while addressing the room like a late-night bit. Subtle? Not really. Newsworthy? Absolutely.
