The smash Netflix hit Bridgerton has made a lot of changes from its source material – some great, some not so great.

Now Season 3 has wrapped filming, and while we don't have a release date yet some of us are re-reading Romancing Mister Bridgerton to get ready. We're refreshing ourselves on the Colin-Penelope romance and taking guesses on what will make it to the screen. What will change? What will stay the same?

There are a lot of details that fans are hoping to see play out on the show, including Colin's discovery of Penelope's secret identity and that infamously steamy carriage ride. However, one also has to hope that Bridgerton will take the opportunity to fix one of the book's biggest fails.

Unfortunately, that big fail is, uh… (*checks notes*) Colin's entire personality.

In Julia Quinn's defense, tastes have changed in the 20+ years since Romancing Mister Bridgerton was published. At the time, Angry Alpha Males were all the rage (still are, to a certain degree). Unfortunately, that means that Colin Bridgerton, who begins the book as a sweet and considerate boy-next-door, quickly devolves into a controlling, angry jerk-next-door.

He's jealous of Penelope's success, orders her around, and generally acts like an authoritative ass. This is supposed to make him a more appealing romantic hero. Who wants a nice, supportive man when you could have a jerk? Amiright ladies?

Visit Julia Quinn's website, and this is the 'Quinn-tessential Quote' listed on the page for Romancing Mister Bridgerton. To be clear, this is a single quote that is printed in giant letters, and is actually meant to make you like the character enough to buy the book.

'Colin decided then and there that the female mind was a strange and incomprehensible organ - one which no man should even attempt to understand. There wasn't a woman alive who could go from point A to B without stopping at C, D, X, and 12 along the way.'

Cool, cool, cool. I'm not sure if this translates to 'women be crazy' or just 'women be illogical', but I truly hate it. And that's the quote that meant to show Colin in a CHARMING LIGHT!! Have fun with the rest of it (like when he yells at Penelope or grabs her arm hard enough to bruise).

Bridgerton hasn't been shy about making changes to its source material in the past. Here's hoping they will address this major flaw in the book, and give us a romantic hero who is actually worthy of Penelope's heart.
