As Smulders said, 'Canadians stick together.'

How long has it been since you last watched Lost? The show has been a real rollercoaster in its time, offering both a fascinating mystery thriller and a heartbreaking drama.

Aside from the enigmatic island with a long history, it's the characters and their stories that have made the show so iconic.

Kate Austen was one of those beloved characters. While the script for her might have been a bit of a missed opportunity, fans still remember Kate as a strong woman who was able to be a leader despite all the trauma of her past. And we have her actress, Evangeline Lilly, to thank for that. But did you know that Kate could have been played by… Robin Scherbatsky?

Well, not the How I Met Your Mother character, of course — but the same actress who portrayed her, Cobie Smulders. She was auditioning for the role together with Lilly, and things might have turned out differently if Smulders hadn't flunked it!

At San Diego Comic-Con back in 2014, Evangeline Lilly and Cobie Smulders enjoyed a sort of sweet reunion and talked about their long history together. It turns out Cobie was the first person Evangeline met in LA. Here's what the Lost alum had to say about her friend:

'She took me under her wing, she let me hang out with her friends, she took me shopping in Venice, she let me stay at her place. She didn't know me from a hole in the wall…' Lilly shared.

The two Canadian actresses first met on a plane on their way to auditions for Lost. They bonded right away and have remained close friends ever since. What's more, Smulders unintentionally did her friend a huge favor by failing the audition for the role of Kate!

'She owes a lot to me because I went in and I bombed the audition. And she was like, "Thank you!"' Smulders admitted jokingly.

We're glad things worked out this way, as the careers of both actresses were not harmed by this twist of fate, and we eventually got two bright characters to remember for years to come — Lilly's Kate Austin and Smulders' Robin Scherbatsky.
