As the WGA strike continues to wreak havoc on the entertainment industry, the second season of Rings of Power is already facing significant setbacks.

And now, with only 19 days of filming left, the absence of executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay is beginning to cast a shadow of uncertainty over the series' return.

Why RoP is set to face significant setbacks

As a consequence of the constantly disruptive WGA strikes, the Amazon Prime series has been forced to forge ahead without the creative guidance of Payne and McKay. As writer-producers of the show, due to the rules of the strike, they are prohibited from engaging in any writing-related tasks during its duration. This includes making any crucial creative decisions on set. Therefore, non-writing executive producers, directors, and the rest of the crew have been tasked with overseeing the now UK-based shoot.

How the production is coping without its lead executive producers

Despite the challenges posed by the strike, the production team of RoP have been prepared for this eventuality. Payne and McKay are said to have worked closely with the team, planning for their potential absence to minimize disruption. Fortunately, this foresight has allowed multiple units to continue filming and ensure progress is maintained despite their absence.

However, the strike's impact may continue to extend much further than any preparation made so far. With the looming contract deadline for SAG-AFTRA and the DGA on June 30, the industry faces the possibility of an even more severe shutdown. Should the guilds and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers fail to reach a new contract agreement by that date, actors and directors may join the strike too. Leading to more widespread and drastic disruption.

Why this will have a major impact on season 2

The second season of RoP has already faced significant challenges, including relocating its production from New Zealand to the UK. The eight-episode series, which commenced filming on October 3, 2022, has been a massive undertaking, requiring meticulous planning and coordination. While other executive producers such as Callum Greene, Justin Doble, Jason Cahill, and Gennifer Hutchison have remained involved, the absence of Payne and McKay is said to have been felt throughout the production.

Whether fans agree with all of Payne and McKay's choices for the show, it cannot be disputed that the lack of the pair's creative input throughout the series' development may cause its final outcome to seem misguided and inconsistent. Yet with so much riding on the season's release, especially considering the vast budget the show costs, it can not afford to wait for setbacks.

Only time will tell how the strike will ultimately shape the fate of the next season of RoP. But, for now, fans of the series anxiously await the completion of the production. Hoping that the collective efforts of the remaining team members will deliver a successful continuation of the series. Otherwise, they may have to expect the worst for the show's future.
