An exciting piece of gossip is being spread across the net.

It's been a year since Amazon Prime released The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, a new installment in the cherished Middle Earth franchise based on J.R.R. Tolkien's lore. The highly anticipated premiere ended up being a huge disappointment for many LOTR fans, who didn't appreciate that it deviated too much from the source material. To add insult to injury, Amazon Prime lost money on the first season, seeing how it had reportedly allocated almost $1 billion to produce the five-installment show.

Nevertheless, the streaming platform decided to honor its commitment to the story and immediately began work on The Rings of Power's second season, which was confirmed by the showrunners in October 2022. Now, rumors suggest that the studio has begun production on the third chapter, even though there's still a year to go before the release of season 2.

Season 2 Release Date

Set thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, The Rings of Power delves into the creation of the world as we know it. From the elves' journey to the forging of the infamous rings and the ensuing wars with evil, the Amazon Prime show aims to offer a comprehensive explanation of the beloved fantasy world that has captivated generations of readers and viewers.

So far, season 1 has depicted events from the first age, suggesting that season 2 will focus on what went on in the second age. Although production never paused, as there were no strikes in the UK, there still remains a lot of work to be done. Thus, no official release date has been finalized yet. All we can say at this stage is that it will premiere sometime in 2024.

Season 3 Early Renewal

Strangely enough, even though season 2 hasn't even been scheduled yet, Amazon Prime is rumored to have 'internally' renewed The Rings of Power for a third season, which is also said to be already in the pipeline. The largest LOTR fandom media, Fellowship of Fans, posted on Instagram that the show's third installment was greenlit back in August and has been in pre-production ever since.

Seeing how Amazon Prime hasn't made any official announcements regarding the matter, we probably shouldn't view the third season as a done deal yet. Still, it's definitely good news for every LOTR fan eagerly awaiting the premiere of season 2.
