Rings of Power Canon Problems Won't Disappear in S2: They'll Get Worse
Fans should prepare themselves for another controversial season.
Despite Amazon Prime's marketing team spending a few years promoting Rings of Power as one of the most expensive shows in the history of television and assuring dedicated fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's works that the project would adhere strictly to the Lord of the Rings canon, the moment the first season premiered early last year, fans got really angry.
The underwhelming fantasy project not only failed to look like the most expensive show in history, but it was also exceedingly tedious to watch and riddled with numerous major canon inconsistencies.
The writers clearly attempted to incorporate as many of Tolkien's renowned characters as possible into their narrative, but this strategy backfired. Fans quickly realized that some of the heroes who appeared concurrently in the show actually lived centuries apart in the books.
Apology Tour
Following the disastrous first season, Amazon Prime's producers embarked on a genuine apology tour, promising fans that the forthcoming second season would rectify all the errors of the first while adhering faithfully to Tolkien's canon. However, fans didn't buy these assurances for a second, and here's why.
Things Getting Worse
The thing is, it is clear that the upcoming season will contain even more canon-defying moments than the first installment of Rings of Power. That is because the characters and events have already been established, and since all the main heroes will appear in the second season, there is no way canon ample inconsistencies can be avoided.
Fans will once again see characters that lived hundreds of years apart in the books sharing the same scenes in the show, and this can't be rectified because the contracts with the cast have already been finalized.
Additionally, due to the foundation established by the first season, the subsequent installment will expand on the canon-defying events even further, deviating from the canonical narrative created by the legendary British author even more.
It looks like fans of the original books should forget about the canon from here on out, as the writers simply can't get out of the corner they wrote themselves into in the first season of Rings of Power. There is no way back to the canon now.
