TBBT revolves around a group of nerdy friends from Caltech and their neighbours, friends and family. As a classic sitcom featuring a laugh track, it focuses on a rather unorthodox set of characters – socially inept and somewhat peculiar. The show's humour largely stems from these qualities. Despite being atypical and mostly unrelatable, The Big Bang Theory characters have become hugely popular with fans. However, not all of them are equally adored.

Here's an unofficial ranking of TBBT's characters based on the level of fan love for them.

1. Leonard Hofstadter

Unsurprisingly, the intelligent and socially-savvy yet awkward scientist tops the list. He's amusing and possesses a unique understanding of society, but he has a downside as the show's ultimate womaniser, having cheated on his numerous girlfriends countless times.

2. Sheldon Cooper

Sheldon's ranking may surprise many viewers. He's often mean and inconsiderate, largely self-centred, and extremely arrogant. Nonetheless, Sheldon is one of the most beloved characters on TBBT, and he's the only character on the show to have his own spinoff series, Young Sheldon.

3. Howard Wolowitz

Despite his apparent perpetual thirst, Howard is a nice guy, and viewers can see this. He's mild-mannered, absolutely hilarious, and nearly fearless when it comes to dealing with people (especially women).

4. Amy F. Fowler

In many respects, Amy is a female counterpart to Howard. She's overtly sexual and seemingly ferocious. Moreover, Amy is almost as blunt as Sheldon, making them a fitting couple in the end. She adds an extra touch of fun to TBBT's overall hilarity.

5. Penny

She may not even have a last name, but Penny is one of the three original main cast members. A failed actress, she serves as a dose of reality and normalcy among the show's other characters. The dynamic between Sheldon and her largely drives TBBT, as there's an almost never-ending sense of conflict between the two. Perhaps this is why she may be seen as an antagonist on the show.

6. Raj Koothrappali

The best word to describe Rajesh would be 'creep'. He's utterly unable to communicate with anyone outside the gang, particularly with women. When medicated, he's exceedingly nasty to other characters. Most importantly, he treats women terribly.

7. Bernadette Rostenkowski

As the show's pageant girl, Bernadette is the least favourite of all. She comes across as a bit of a Karen and is often highly unpleasant. Bernadette is more annoying than Sheldon, which places her at the bottom of the list.

Regardless of their popularity, TBBT's characters are remarkable and instantly recognisable, and each contributes something unique to the show's success and undying popularity.
