Reddit Picks Most Overrated Riverdale Character, and the Results Are Surprising
The most annoying Riverdale character, according to fans, does not deserve a solo spinoff.
Over the course of its nearly seven-year run, Riverdale has seen many characters come and go. Some lasted longer than others, and fans loved them. But then again, some characters started out on a high note but, over time, evolved into major irritants for the Riverdale fandom. Many believe that one such character has been getting too much undeserved praise recently.
When Redditors were asked about who they thought the most overrated Riverdale character was, the nearly unanimous answer was Josie McCoy.
Even though Josie has been gone from the CW series in the past two seasons, people still can't get over her. Portrayed by Ashleigh Murray, the character was introduced in Season 1 of Riverdale as Archie Andrews' classmate and girlfriend for a short spell, as well as the lead singer of the rock band Josie and the Pussycats, which she pulled the plug on at the end of Season 3 to pursue a solo career and become a multi-platinum superstar.
As a result, the character featured in the spinoff Katy Keene, which The CW cancelled after just one season. Josie then returned to Riverdale as a guest star in Season 5 to look into her father's death, make amends with her former bandmates and revive the Pussycats. After they left town for a tour, rumours of a spinoff focusing on Josie and the band spread like wildfire across the Internet. But it looks like Archieverse fans are not interested in seeing more of Josie.
‘If I see one more post about [Josie] deserving a spin off, I may die. No she doesn’t,’ a fan wrote in a Reddit discussion about the matter, echoing the sentiments of others.
The fandom's consensus is that apart from a few interesting scenes, Josie has been an overrated and boring character made to seem far more important than she really ever was. A spinoff about her would be a disaster. There just isn't enough material to base a whole series on. In addition, many fans find Josie and her arc super annoying.
‘As a character, Josie is so self-righteous. She sees herself as superior in talent, intelligence and determination to everyone around her,’ another fan explained.
That just goes to show that The CW needs to think long and hard before including Josie in any future Riverdale spinoffs, should there be any.
