Reddit Names 15 Most Underrated TV Series Barely Anyone Knows
Must-see shows you’ve probably never heard of.
Looking for a new TV show to get stuck into?
Here are 15 underrated shows you may never have heard of, but are worth a watch according to Reddit:
1. Continuum
This Canadian time-travelling drama sees terrorists and a cop transported from the year 2077 to 2012. Finding they can act now to prevent corporations taking over the world, the terrorist gang is intent on destruction – while the cop who inadvertently accompanied them into the past tries to thwart their efforts.
2. Reaper
A dark comedy that follows Sam Oliver who, on his 21st birthday, discovers that when he became ill as a child, his parents sold his soul to the devil in exchange for their son’s recovery. So, he sets out on a quest to return lost souls to hell.
3. The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.
A hybrid of sci-fi and classic Western, this show sees the titular character (played by Bruce Campbell) trying to track down fugitives who killed his father. It’s got everything you expect in a Western - but with a bit of sci-fi tech thrown in.
4. Jack of All Trades
A historical spy action-comedy that starred Bruce Campbell as a US spy protecting American interests from the fictional island of Pulau-Pulau. There are plenty of running jokes, a nice sprinkling of pun-based jokes, and a fair whack of innuendo. Silly, but funny.
5. Travelers
A post-apocalyptic sci-fi. ‘Travelers’ from the future have their consciences sent back in time to inhabit the bodies of people who are close to. It all sounds a bit weird, but they’re operatives coming back from the future to protect society. Season 1 received a score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
6. Patriot
A comedy-drama based on US intelligence officers trying to influence an Iranian election following the death of a moderate candidate and likely election of a nuclear-hungry extremist. It’s a bit of a touchy subject, but the acting and characterisation make it watchable.
7. Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
A spoof horror starring Richard Ayoade, Matt Berry and Matthew Holness. The show parodies the early 80’s horror genre that took itself far too seriously and creates a show-within-a-show that is fundamentally awful and poorly produced.
8. Bored to Death
A little-known US comedy that ran for three seasons from 2009 -2011. Jason Schwartzman plays a struggling writer who ‘accidentally’ becomes a part-time private eye – and discovers he’s not very good at that either.
9. The Fall
This tense crime drama sees a Met Police detective (played by Gillian Anderson) desperately hunting down a serial killer (Jamie Dornan) in Belfast. Superbly written and acted, it will have you on the edge of your seat throughout.
10. Haven
A Canadian/American supernatural drama that sees an FBI agent (played by Emily Parker) sent to a small town in Maine for a routine job. While there, she gets drawn into strange goings on – which have occurred in the town before. And it appears she may be more closely linked to them than she knew.
11. Pushing Daisies
A bonkers comedy that stars Lee Pace as Ned, a pie-maker who can bring people back from the dead. After reincarnating his childhood crush and assembling a motley crew of quirky characters, Ned uses his skill to solve crime. It’s offbeat, irreverent and fast-paced – and it’ll put a smile on your face.
12. Dollhouse
A sci-fi drama in which ‘actives’ who live in ‘dollhouses’ are controlled by underground networks. The actives are people who can be hired by wealthy individuals and programmed to carry out pretty much any task. Each active – who signed up willingly in exchange for huge amounts of money – has their memory wiped so they can be reprogrammed as required. But the main protagonist, Echo, can still remember elements of her past.
13. Ripper Street
This mystery drama set in Victorian London was first broadcast by the BBC and later moved to Amazon. The series opens with the memory of Jack the Ripper’s victims still very much in the psyche of police and public alike and follows the officers of H Division who patrol the streets where the killer struck.
14. The Critic
From the creators of The Simpsons, this animated comedy has a similar tone. It follows a film critic who is highly critical of pretty much every movie he sees. Interesting storylines, a top cast of secondary characters and plenty of parodies make this a show well worth giving a bit of time to.
15. The Riches
Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver play two Irish Travellers and con artists who take on the identities – and wealth – of a dead couple. But living the life of a wealthy American couple who resides in a gated community is not as easy as it sounds. Top comedy that was shut down due to the 2007/08 writers' strike and never came back.
